In the 1970's I lived in a rural community a few hours north east of Toronto. I worked for a Residential Treatment Centre for High Risk Children. This organization had 12 different homes in the area and each had 8 to 12 children in them. Each home had different names they were identified as. One of the ones I worked at was named "Airport Farm" since we were right beside a small airport. The airport only was staffed at certain times during the week
I used to go in at 5:30 am relieve the Night Staff and start to get Breakfast ready before waking the kids.
One morning at 6 am the phone rang so answered it saying "Airport Farm and my name.
Right off the bat the person asked me how high the ceiling was?
Huh? way to early for that kind of silliness
He asked again I looked up and said about 15 feet
All I heard was "WHAT"??????????? That's not right How High is your Ceiling"?
repeated 15 feet and he got quite upset with me. After a few minutes he calmed down a bit and said "Are you the Airport"? I replied "No we are a Group Home named Airport Farm"
He told me he was calling from the Toronto Island Airport had a plane coming in within 15 minutes and wanted to know the weather. Then asked me if I could go out look up and tell him how high the clouds were. I did thinking he is really going to trust me on this? I had no idea. Told him what I thought it was he thanked me and soon after the plane landed without any problems.
Again way to early in the day for this silliness
Same place picked up the phone one day A Guy asked for so and so and I said no such person here. He said he has to be there and took it took me awhile to convince him I had no idea who that was.
At that time you could tell if the call was long distance or not. The reception was different sounding. Thought he was probably phoning from Toronto. Not so he replied Capetown South Africa
Due to the phone rates of the time that must have been one expensive call for a wrong number
More recently entered the apartment complex I live in. Entrance to the interior is done by a phone system Call up by pressing a code one presses the access # and the door unlocks
Came in there were 3 police officers at the panel looking frustrated and were laughing
Could hear a woman saying "Who are you and where are you"? They kept saying the Police we need to get in. She was totally confused saying "Where is your car? I cannot see you and how can you be in my hallway"?
Took awhile but they realized the phone lines had crossed and she was no where near where we were. She lived in a Private Home right across the city about 12 km's away.
They hung up I let them in and one officer told me they would have to go to her home after and apologize for the confusion
