‘Union wants Canada Post to start low-income bank and green shift. Sounds nice, but who pays?’

I'm looking at one of the pics running with this story, the one that illustrates the striking workers on the last day, and notice for the first time that they're burning trash in an oil drum.

Now, this burning-trash-in-an-oil-drum is the iconic image of 'unfortunates staying warm in the cold' so I don't doubt this imagery was staged for a reason but... oil drum? Burning junk? Where does one even find an oil drum with which to burn lumber in this day and age? It's not 1979.

Doesn't strike me as very 'green'. And whose rusty oil drum is this? Who brought a greasy oil drum to work?

Cough, coughCough, cough

What puzzles me is that so many of the strikers were wearing uniforms while on the picket line.

My understanding is that uniforms are issued by the company for on duty use only.

Wearing them while off duty is a violation of the rules.

Ah, the beauty in an ebay-sourced vintage oil drum: too lovely to hand down a life sentence to burning barrel. I found this on the inter web with handy-dandy tips for all my burning questions on burning barrels: https://commonsensehome.com/how-to-make-a-burn-barrel/

The best part was their advice on creating ventilation for your do-it-yourself burning barrel. "How you put holes in the drum is up to you. Some people use a drill, others use a handgun."

The union, CUPW,  has promoted postal banking for many years.

With a postal bank, Canada Post would have more earnings, and the workers can be paid higher salaries.  The union wants this to happen.

The Canadian banks say..... No, No, NO to the potential of a postal bank.    Could there be a rule about who can open a bank?

The idea of a postal bank in a remote area brings forward  the concept of safety.

When one pays with a bank card, how many get the notice..... Do you want cash? (or something similar).  This money comes directly from your bank account.  As long as the money is deposited in a bank account, this becomes a way to withdraw that money.

This withdrawal of money cannot be done at a postal outlet,  but it can be done at many department, food and drug stores, when something is bought..

Postal outlets can issue money orders and then other methods of sending money to someone.

The idea of electric vehicles  is coming.

The question becomes.... What will happens when oil reserves are depleted....

There will come a day when gasoline becomes history.

India is one country where the electric driven vehicle is mandated..  The railway will be fully electric driven in 2022.  The process started in 1925.

I do remember something such as  ...   only electric driven vehicles will be sold in India after 2030.

We will eventually all live without oil reserves,  and gasoline...

I don't really know enough about postal banking (or the long-term cost-benefit analysis of acquiring fleets of electric cars) to offer a strong opinion on them but I am willing to go on record to question whether contract arbitration is the right place for that particular debate and/or discussion.

Presumably, CUPW has tidy savings of its own so perhaps CUPW could explore the idea of opening credit unions in remote communities and leasing that space from the post offices there in order to make 'postal banking' happen. Since they are so strongly in favour of the idea for the good of all Canadians.

"If there were good returns in this kind of business, the private sector would already be doing it," Whalen said of the proposed postal bank. "If the union thinks this is a great idea, are they going to be an investor in the bank?"

The private sector is.

It's called 'banks'.

The way a bank makes money is by borrowing from its customers at low interest rates (savings accounts) and loaning it  back to them at high interest rates (credit cards, mortgages).

The union doesn't seem to be much interested in merchant banking and international banking.

In some small towns, the post office is in the Federal Building.

Employees are handling money for passports, income taxes, and GSP/HST payments already.

Not to mention cash payments for stamps and parcels.  Adding banking to the mix would not be a security problem.

And if, like the ordinary banks, they charged fees for their services, much of the overhead would be covered.

In any case, money is mainly trust.

Which is why banks give credit cards to freshmen university students with their orientation packages, along with the pizza coupons and deodorant samples. Once the kid, potentially a high income earner, starts using it, there is a good chance they will be a customer for life. Well worth the occasional deadbeat-- whose daddy is likely high income already.

As for the 'green' post offices.
Any building needs occasional maintenance. Add the solar collectors when the roof is repaired and insulation added.

Put in a recharging station for the postal trucks and rent time on it when they are not around. Or put in two, one specifically for government/PO vehicles and one public with rentable time.
