Does Fedex charge random fees if just shipping within Canada?

I know Fedex and UPS have a history of making up crazy fees that aren't disclosed at the time of purchase, but for UPS we havent had any problems when shipping just within Canada. UPS is charging twice the amount that fedex is for a shipping rate and I have never used fedex before so I was wondering if it is like UPS and "safe" to use just within Canada.

Not so much additional fees but "reassessment" of the shipment fee, based on package weight, mostly.

There are quite a few threads about this. E.g.,

I've had no problems at all with UPS within Canada. I always input larger sizes and dimensions to make sure. Actually I haven't had any issues with them to the USA either, but I haven't sent anything there since the changes.  I refuse to use Fedex, although they never appear to be cheaper anyway.

I would suggest using Click Ship to buy your UPS and Purolator labels.

For shipping within Canada one of the most used upchages is for Residential Addresses or "remote" addresses.

A lot depends on the specific service you use, the cheaper the service the more likely an upcharge.

In general UPS is less of a problem than FedEx.

The real problem is using eBay supplied shipping labels for UPS/FedEx. If there are any issues of any kind the carrier will tell you to deal with eBay and eBay will tell you to deal with the carrier.

Yeah, I had one upcharge recently with UPS for a residential address that I thought was commercial. I think I was charged about $1, which is completely fair.

What is a "Residential Addresses" upcharge?

I never had any issues with domestic or US shipping with UPS (until now of cause). I also never had any strange or remote addresses, all were withing well developed centers. Maybe that's the secret.

Fedex though... When they were just added to ebay I used them for domestic and had 1  inflated shipping charge that they couldn't explain, said "maybe you measured it wrong". I know I didn't! And one more time when the buyer called them and changed the address after I shipped the item. They charged this "service" fee right back to me without explanation, I just saw that the shipping cost was double and called them. Never used them again since. And the UPS or Can.post was always cheaper anyway, so, never missed them.
