eBay keeps getting worse. Finally had enough of the absorbent Fees.

Since the move away from Paypal my "Variable Fees" are now at 14.55%. They used to be 10% + 2.5-3% total.

Shipping Internationally comes with an extra arbitrary "Fee" bringing it up to 15%. Another bs cash grab.

Final Value Fee... Another cash grab.

eBay adds the Tax on the buyers side from his home country but then charges you in your local country with no option to pass the fees on to the buyer. Not sure why we even get double Taxed, other services don't do this but hey, it's eBay. Good luck getting any decent customer service.

I don't sell small nick nacks, so my last sale was 120+ days ago. I am now dropped down to casual seller and have a 2 week hold on my funds after being a memeber since 2009. I mainly sell music and there are much better avenues for this such as discogs.com (8% fee).

Just figured i'd vent my frusteration if anyone actually reads these things.

eBay is a joke. I will be making no new music related listings on here.

:>)  "National treasure"    I LOVE that you said that!

From my personal experience keeping an instrument/record B&M store open 44 years is a feat of magic.

That store actually started in his mom's basement.  They were successful getting the Beatles brands of instruments and selling them. After awhile Mrs. Schaubroeck tossed them out because there were salesmen in suits hanging in her living room, loud guitars and kids needing to use the bathroom.

I'm working on one lot of HOG items from the 70's.  On eBay I ordered the final item which is a 1978 magazine containing  a biographical article on Armand.  It was shipped Feb 7 from a seller in California. He used USPS first class. I still haven't received it. USPS shows it reached customs. The trail ends there.

Canada Post doesn't recognize the tracking number. I'm assuming USPS 1st class isn't tracked internationally. It's too bad because when the article was printed Armand sent a signed postcard to the author thanking him for writing the magazine article. The postcard has a picture of Armand and his brother wearing that "Kill Me" shirt. The one  in your "bunny" video clip. (I did think you were mocking me... LOL) the photo was taken in the House Of guitars. I have that post card. I hoped to pair it with the lost magazine and other HOG memorabilia. It will be the type of listing of interest to a music museum where some of my stuff goes.

I closed my store in 2006. I was using Global Payments for POS and card processing. If I remember correctly their percentage was just under 2%.  I had to battle with processors a lot and negotiate rates. One time they lost an entire electronic deposit for around $1000. Eventually they replaced it.  I had to sign a release form. I wasn't doing any volume. It makes me wonder what sort of percentage eBay pays for processing.

With respect to FV fees paid on foreign taxes collected and remitted. I'm unaware if the US states pay eBay a  commision for doing that. Since the program began I haven't heard anyone mention it. Possibly you know.

With respect to managed payments I'm likely one of the few that really likes it. At the beginning I had a lot of trouble setting up like many but now it's tickety boo.

I'm done talking about fees. On the cusp of the Spring Update I hoped to bring them up for discussion. things have to settle down to attract new sellers and new buyers. No company can perpetually grow from the inside out.  They ask for feedback so that's mine.  I'm not bringing it up again.

It can be frustrating selling here but I do love it. I enjoy handing over a piece of music history to someone who appreciates it. Maybe it's my penance for selling 100 drums sets in 1985 (mostly to parents). I wonder what instrument you bought your kid? LOL

The other good thing I like is seller/buyer protection. We have to give credit where credit is due. I hope my buyer protection prevails in the case of my missing magazine...

Ahoy eBay Mateys! Let's all go selling on the high fees!

Over & out. (until someone says "music"....

I'm assuming USPS 1st class isn't tracked internationally.

First Class International Package is tracked, at least  to Canada.  But it is also more expensive than First Class International (letter??).

Re: eBay keeps getting worse. Finally had enough of the absorbent Fees.

Thanks.

It was a free newspaper style mag of 40pages. Weight would probably be around 200 grams.  I'll be more careful when I purchase something that's rare.  The seller charged me $16usd for shipping from Calli-Kelowna.  I just assumed it had tracking.

Will give you some idea.

If he cheaped out and sent it First-Class Mail® International Large Envelope he would pay $6.63 or so.

45 Days In Transit.JPG

Thanks. I found  this on a 3rd party site. Shows the service  was 1st Class Package Int.  About 2 weeks ago  I let the seller know it didn't arrive.  Time was running out so I opened an INR. 1st time & I feel bad about that but it's $50 with s&h. Silence from the seller.  eBay put the case on hold to April 1 (waiting for documents). He's likely running out the clock ...

I'm not worried about the money but it's sure is a lousy buyer experience.  2 months waiting jumping through hoops. 2 other copies of the item became available but more costly. I'm hestitant to purchase one until this is resolved.

Thanks again for your input.

@recped wrote:
... the increased rate for Media (2%) happened BEFORE most .ca sellers moved from PayPal to Managed Payments.

The media increase back then was only on ebay.com, not on ebay.ca

FVF rates for media (April 2022):

12.9% for eBay.CA (was 12.35%)

versus

14.6% for ebay.COM (was 14.55%)

Side note compare: AZ.ca is 15% plus $1.00 and AZ.com is 15% plus $1.80 for media sales

...

Why the difference in rates for media?

Perhaps because Canada Post does not have media mail, which makes tracked shipping for media a lot more expensive in Canada. So ebay would be making more money from the shipping FVF portion on .ca than on .com -- so can have a lower % rate to balance that difference.

That's just idle speculation.  But whatever the reason, I have shifted my listing of media to Canada (it used to be 50/50) because of that small price spread.  Sales seem to be much the same regardless of which site I use.

Re: eBay keeps getting worse. Finally had enough of the absorbent Fees.

I never received a FV fee refund from any of those transactions and was wondering. Now that I read your post I understand this process doesn't start until March 30 2022.

The credit on partial refunds doesn't start until May.

Re: eBay keeps getting worse. Finally had enough of the absorbent Fees.

Thank you for the correction. When I read eBays new fee policy (not the Seller Update) but the policy I assumed the refund of partial FVs would coincide with the hike.

"We're increasing final value fees in most categories for listings that sell on or after March 30,2022. Learn more about these and other fees changes in our Winter Seller Update"
.
