When bidding within last few seconds, is time added to encourage additional bids by watching bidders like other bidding sites?

Not that I know of. Once the auction timer is up, the auction is over.

This is why the best advice I can give is to follow a fellow user's oft-repeated advice: Bid once. Bid your maximum.

The time running out is the auctioneer's hammer.

Bid once, bid your maximum.

It is not the last bid that wins, it is the highest bid.

EBay is a little like a called auction, and a lot like a mail auction. When the last mail delivery comes in on the day of the auction, no more bids are accepted.
