Hi.
I was wondering if a seller can ask me to abandon my buyer protection if I choose the uninsured inexpensive shipping option... it's the first time I've had this request.

Your payment protected by paypal (not by sellers). Seller responsible for delivery, if you will not receive your item in 45 days, you can file Not Receive claim.
Type of shipping or method has nothing to do with buyer protection.

A lot of sellers, particularly American, seem to think that their personal preferences override the contracts they signed with eBay and with Paypal.
If you pay through Paypal, you are protected by Paypal. The seller must be able to show that the item arrived within 45 days and in described condition or PP will force the refund (but only once you return the item).
Insurance only benefits the seller. Tracking only benefits the seller.
If you are considering opting for Surface shipping from overseas, be aware that you may not see your purchase for between six weeks and three months. Is the lower price worth the long wait?

A seller can ask you to do anything but that doesn't mean you have to comply with them.
