If you have any bids on the item, be sure to cancel them before you cancel the auction.

Otherwise, eBay will deem that you have sold it to the current high bidder. The bidder can then file a Dispute if you do not complete that sale and you will have an infraction on your selling record. In addition, the annoyed buyer can leave feedback and the more important Detailed Seller Ratings.
