If so, what is your opinion? Looks great for rural areas. I am having it installed this week.

Would love for you to come back and let me know if you like it after a couple of weeks of using it. I hate the slow dial up and satellite is my only other option. Thanks sarah

We have had it for over a year. Wouldn't want to eBay with out it. Tech support is poor. Signed up with Copperhead.cc and use their forums before contacting Lincsat tech support. Service is stable except for heavy storms then there is no signal. Sometimes the storm is on their end and we don't know why it is down. Keep a backup dialup account. It only storms on free listing days. Download speeds are great for large files. Basic surfing can be sluggish but still faster than dialup. Best part it is always on and fairly easy to network when everything works. Couldn't get it installed on a new Sony Viao computer. Returned it for a HP and plugged it in and worked like it should.

The initial cost was comparable to trenching in another phone line for dedicated internet use. The $100 a month service is reasonable considering it used daily on three or more computers for eBay and evenings by three children. Let me know if you have any specific questions.

I actually had a flyer from them last week and thought about looking into this. We don't have DSL in my rural area as yet, so it seems interesting. Not sure I like the idea of the storms knocking it out though. Also, you mention about the Sony Vaio..........just bought my son a new one back in July and my laptop is the Vaio also so it would seem that it won't work on these so I guess I can forget about it. Did they ever say why the problem with the Vaio? That's so strange. Thanks for the info Bob.

Bob,
Thanks for the info. Mine was activated today at noon. Exactly as you say. A little disappointed in browsing speed but downloads are awesome. $1460 installed plus -$400 rebate. I think this comes off of monthly fee.

Another though is to wireless network it to surrounding houses and split the expense.

Merry Christmas, John

Deb,
The problem with the Sony was their Tech support's attitude. They refuse to discuss networking even though they include a network card in their system. Very frustrating because Lincsat won't discuss networking either. Their promo literature brags about high-speed service on a network but when it comes time to install or support the network they state their obligation is to support it on the one installed computer. The problem was likely the pre-installed anti-virus software or firewall. There was no reason our installer could find for it not to work, but on the other hand he couldn't get it to work and he tried everything from changing network adapter cards, disabling all the background programs, etc. all at my expense. The installation fee is for one computer and setting up the network is extra. I have no regrets switching to the HP and bought another one this summer and it plugged into the network just fine.

I did set up a wireless network to use Lincsat on a PocketPC. Way too slow compared to a wired connection and very limited range. Just sold the PocketPC and WiFi stuff on eBay. As luck would have it the WAP router buyer ended up being a NPB and we just bought a new Toshiba laptop with a built-in wireless adapter. Now I am setting it all back up to try again. I know it will be slow, but someone doesn't want me dropping cables throughout the house "just in case I want to use the laptop here or there."

John, I hope you are pleased and if you do run into any problems, check out the website at Copperhead.cc for tech support.

Bob

Thanks for the information Bob. Maybe I'll get my son to disable the firewall and see if the networking works. It's the strangest thing really.
