I do not know if this is only in ebay stores as on ebay motors i can see the trading name of who i am bidding against.  when i am bidding on auction it shows up that i am bidding against some one whose identity is protected????  makes me wonder sometimes if i am bidding against the store---even though there is no reserve how do you know that there is actually another person bidding against you and not the store???  Then when i have not won the bid sometimes they come back to me and give it to me at my highest bid as a second chance offer????  is there any way of knowing if the bids against you are legitimate???

The bids are legitimate.

The Bidders IDs are protected for a myriad of reasons.

If you receive a second chance offer the seller could have multiples of the item or the winning bidder decided not to pay for the item.

This bugs me as well but not because the bidders may be fraudulent but because it messes with my bidding strategies.  I don't know if there is 2 bids from the same buyer above my bid or 2 different bidders......it matters sometimes if you want to creap up on the top bidder then take em out at the end. I tend not to bid on private identity auctions because of this.

Simple solution. Bid the max amount you are willing to pay for the item including shipping.

It doesn't matter at all. You have to take your chances like all the other bidders.

Keep in mind any bidder, not just the top bidder at the time, can still take you out at the end.

I've done it many ways.  If I bid the max right away then somebody else creeps up on me and leaves me paying my maximum bid. If I wait til the end then sometimes you can catch them by suprise and get the item cheaper.  In my experience, you can get an item cheeper if you sabotage bid than if you increment bid over the course of the auction.

I like to creep up on a bidder sometimes not to overbid them but just to see what they bid....if I feel I really want the items then i will overbid, otherwise I will leave the other bidder paying their max bid......maybe this is ethicly wrong but It's not illegal.  It would be schill bidding if I know the seller and wanted to help them out but I wouldn't do that..Smiley Very Happy

Seeing the other bidders id's in the bid history doesn't matter much if I want to sabotage bid to win the item......in this case I would just put in my max bid with intentions to win the item.  But when I want to be a "creep" then I like to see the id's.  Sometimes you know who you are bidding against just by their feedback number and your experience with them in other auctions.

I will never understand the strategy of bidding up an item days before it ends. It seems ridiculous to increase the bid on an item needlessly when you have no chance of winning that item for several days. Too many items are bid up, increasing the cost of that item needlessly.

Really? I love it.

But then I'm a seller. Those fighting bidders really push up prices.

I would never try to buy that way.
