It's a shame he never actually held a job as an economist, or he may have had an idea what he is doing.

Or maybe he sees further than we do. Cars from Korea will probably not need as much servicing as Ford so there will be some job losses in car service industry. How about exports to Korea, won't that create new jobs? Canada should not be making cars and cell-phones, let Korea make them. We tried and many people ended up miserable, consumers and employees.

Why should Canada make cars instead of South Korea?
Kinda playing devil's advocate but when you look at the facts it defies all logic that Korea ever sold a car in Canada.
a) we have ample quantities of natural resources
b) ready availability of cheap power
c) reliable domestic fuel sources
d) Canada has 1,000,000 km of roads for 35 million people; S.Korea has 100,000 km of roads for 50 million people
e) There are 600+ vehicles per person in Canada compared to 376 per person in S.Korea
f) direct access to U.S. market

oops that should be "vehicles per 1000 persons" 🙂

The exports will be in the food area and that's not going to create more jobs, unless we can invent more land.

Canadians made good cars in my personal opinion. I've never owned an imported car for two reasons. I find a majority of Asian imported cars unsafe. A friend of mine owns a tow truck company for over 20 years and he has seen a lot of accidents and his opinion is he would never drive one himself or see his family driving one. Secondly I would rather give a Canadian or even an American a job rather than support another country. It's not that I have any prejudices, I just feel good deeds start at home. I couldn't face a Canadian or US auto worker in all good conscience if I was driving a vehicle that put them out of work.
Cellphones, well I'm not really a technology person and if they make them better across the pond, that's fine with me. It's along the same line as cameras which I do know I recommend a couple of Japanese models, but if someone wants the best I say buy German or Swedish.

Really??? And what cars have you owned that were MADE in CANADA? I have seen pictures of a Cadi or Olds 88 and NEITHER were ever made in CANADA they were IMPORTED into Canada from the UNITED STATES.
