How come that the new sellers on e-bay are not aware of the negative impact the global shipping has

I  am just amazed  how many of the us sellers  do not have a clue how the global shipping   negatively impacts their bottom line.  Lots of the new sellers are subscribing to it without even knowing what an increase in the prices this means.  I for one would never buy anything from a seller  who participates in this program

Keep in mind that some (if not many) sellers that have the GSP attached to their listings aren't even aware that it's there, and that includes established sellers as well as new ones.

And also keep in mind that the USA is the largest economy in the world.

If your seller is unaware that she is signed up for the GSP, it means that she has never before had a single non-US sale in all her time selling.

This is no surprising when the seller is new (less than 100 sales) but it can also be true of sellers with thousands of sales.

I just had a package arrive smashed, which had been repacked at the GSP hub in Erlanger. Seller had no clue what went on there, or that ihis well packed item had been opened, poorly repacked, and then sent to me. I think he is now re-thinking using the GSP. Pitney Bowes is scamming both buyers and sellers!!

This happened to us before and the dumb seller wanted us to pay return shipping for the crushed fragile item... Yea right.

This proves how dumb americans are in general. You would think that the same address popping up all the time with different user names would alert them to something funny going on.

I think it just shows how few international sales most U.S. sellers get.  Femmefan's point about long-time, established U.S. sellers having no international sales prior to the GSP is no exaggeration.  The U.S. market is potentially ten times larger than the Canadian market.  Many U.S. sellers do just fine selling only within the United States.

Go to the Resolution Centre and open an Item Not As Described dispute.

Was there a notice in the package that said the item was repacked?

Tell the dispute that the damage occured at the KY plant.

The seller is off the hook once the package arrives in Erlanger. There is no need to contact her, except out of politeness. She probably would like to know how her goods were treated.

EBay and Paypal have been refunding for these damaged goods without the need for the return that is a requirement when the damage is the fault of the sender.

The seller is not totally free of blame in this, btw. Usually GSP/PB opens parcels to ascertain where the item was manufactured when the seller does not specify.  The only countries that belong to NAFTA are Canada, USA, Mexico, Chile and I learned today Peru. Goods manufactured elsewhere are subject to duty.

I'm not certain that is the only reason they repackage items and if that was the reason in this case, the problem was at least partially caused because ebay does not require  that a country of manufacturer be in the item specifics in order for a gsp listing to be posted.  Also, you don't know if the seller even knew they were in the gsp and/or know that they should list the country.

The majority of sellers really do seem oblivious to what is going on around them. I think that the small percentage of sellers who post on the discussion boards are more familiar with the system than most other users. That doesn't absolve those other sellers of all blame in situations like this but ultimately I blame ebay for allowing the gsp system to continue to run without specific controls in place.

Absolutely.

When sellers list items that appear to be in some categories (like a postcard showing Indians) a large red box posts before the seller can confirm the listing, asking if the item meets the eBay standard for listing Native American/First Nations products.

I can see no reason why such a notice couldn't appear on Sell Your Item forms before a seller lists an item using GSP, or even just items with a value under $50 using GSP , and explaining why they should reconsider.

It would be interesting to know whether the country of manufacture is requested anywhere when the seller is shipping to Erlanger. Seems very unlikely.

PB/GSP seems willing to accept responsibility for items damaged in transit, even when the actual problem was from the originator.

I have bought at least 10 to 15 things now using GSP because the taxes and import fees were to my advantage that way. And I can say without any doubt that most items had the Country Of Manufacture specified in the listing and GSP STILL opened the package anyway. So... they are lying when they say they only open if the COM is not specified.

The new US sellers are probably still being enrolled in the GSP by default and know little about how the program works or where to find out.
