I believe in Free Trade.... I really do. However....

Canada Post is issuing a five dollar ($5.00) postage stamp to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Canadian flag.

This stamp, featuring the Canadian flag,  will be used by many Canadian eBay sellers when shipping parcels inside and outside the country.

Yet, Canada Post contracted an American firm, Wausau Coated Products based in Wisconsin, USA, for the satin rayon fabric used for the stamp.

Way back in 1965 when the new Canadian flag design was selected by Parliament, Canada Post issued a five cent postage stamps featuring the flag. It was designed in Canada and printed by the Canadian Bank Note Company, using Canadian made paper.

I miss the "good old days".

Hi Pierre

Have you tried to remove the actual stamp (if there is one) or do you just stick the whole souvenir sheet on with glue stick as I don't believe there is any adhesive on the back?

Thanks for your help

The fabric stamp is on a self-adhesive backing.  Peel the back and you are good to go.

Are we all now waiting for the first varieties to turn up?

Remember the Hologram stamps and all the excitement about the High and Low varieties?

Yes, unfortunately back in 09 when Obama brought in the "buy American" policy for gov't, he took an envious glance at the economy north of the border and decided that Canada didn't need any exemption despite "free" trade. But our government has shown no such common sense approach.

We just let everything go apparently in the belief that the oil industry would cure all ills. Oops!

I can't believe there isn't more of an uproar over things like production of Kellogg's cereal or Maxwell House coffee for Canada getting farmed out to the U.S.

Should never be allowed to happen. Or, at least there needs to be checks to make sure a fair two way street is respected.

Same thing with the ridiculous border crossing documentation. Since that all came in our tourism deficit has soared to $19 B.

We saw the passport law in our cash register.

Our (now closed) shop was a block from Parliament Hill. Every summer, and usually also during Ottawa's Winterlude festival, we would see lots of American coins in the register every day.

Being Scottish, I would put them aside for visits to the US.

When Americans were told they would need passports to re-enter their own country, that screeched to a halt.

FWIW, we only saw a little of the drive up trade, our customer usually flew in for conferences and the like. That didn't stop because business travellers do usually have passports. So overall, we didn't see much difference.

Our next door neighbour who sold souvenirs and sports paraphenalia closed both his shops.

Free Trade is never free with the USA..  They even not  respect what was signed,  that a look at wood we sell there, the impose illegal import tax lol.

Passport was not a problem for me, but some years ago (4 or 5) USA had a motion to also adopt a border crossing fee lol ...

So since that time  I decided to spend my travel money visiting Canada and others countries,  until now I'm pretty please 🙂
