I bought a coat in a auction for $136. a northface parka, the shipping was $20. seemed like a pretty good deal. The seller put a $299. value on it when it came thru customs from the USA to Canada it cost me $45. in customs fees. When I got the coat it was supposed to be a ladies XL but fit more like a S.I think it was a fake.I opened a dispute and was refunded the money but because the seller lied on the customs form I can't get the money back from that and it cost me $35. to send back the coat.
I'm feeling really burned .I'm out $80. and still don't have a winter coat!

also, next time you buy an expensive item from outside the country and can expect Duty charges, be prepared to prove the actual item price when you go to pick it up. If you have a copy of the Listing and the Paypal invoice and/or receipt with you at the time of pick up, this might help get the original charge down if the Seller inflated the value amount - like yours did for whatever reason. If Canada Post won't modify the charge immediately at least you have all the info ready to lodge a dispute (as noted in the above answer).
BTW - I don't know why your seller put such a high value on the item, well over what you paid - seems a bit mean, actually. No purpose - EXCEPT - I bet the item was insured. If it got lost, the seller would get the insurance money, pay you back your purchase price and keep the rest. Thereby ensuring they did not loose anything in the deal. Fine and dandy, except you had to pay extra to protect THEM. A bit unfair. I'd have dinged them on Feedback for that.

Just want to comment on what oskye said...
No matter how much documentation you have, neither Canada Post nor any Postal Outlet you go to will change the value for you. They are not allowed to touch it, they will just tell you to contact CBSA and speak to them about it.
Just my two cents..
