Importing from the US

I am thinking about order approx $1500 worth of merchandise from California. I'm assuming it will be sent via courier ie. fed-ex or ups. In terms of customs (taxes/duties) what should I expect to be charged once the package arrives in Canada? If any of you have experience with importing a shipment of this size can you please give me some advice. I think I can request the shipment to be sent via USPS also, would this be a better alternative to a courier?

Please give me your input.

It depends upon what you are purchasing to determine whether the items are dutiable or not. If they are NAFTA country of origin items, then there is no duty.

You will be charged Provincial tax and GST. In addition, you will be liable for paying for brokerage services to clear the goods through customs and nrokerage fees to collect the taxes and brokerage fees due.

This can be quite expensive so you may either (a) consider retaining your own broker by making inquiries ahead of time or (b) clearing the goods through customs yourself.

UPS is probably the most expensive service of all in terms of charging brokerage fees and their charges can be quite a shocker upon delivery of your items to your front door.

Sorry I wasnt 100% correct in simply stating NAFTA country of origin items are duty free. There are restricted items and other items which will always incur duty charges regardless of where they originated.

As an example, if you were importing even Canadian made alcohol from the US, you will pay duty.

Just to clarify - most duties with the USA have now been eliminated. Some exceptions still exist and there are still import quotas in certain categories. For instance, importing shoes or textiles can be cheap on the invoice but the duties imposed can be a real shocker.

There is no PST applicable if you have a retail sales tax license in your province. If CRA charges the PST and the goods are for resale you can apply for a refund.

If I'm not mistaken, the correct tax applied to alcohol and tobacco is an "Excise" tax - it is largely considered to be a "sin" tax that the Feds dreamt up to penalize us for our bad habits. Excise taxes are also charged on our own Cdn. production. The other large contributor to Excise tax is the petroleum industry.

The least expensive manner to have the goods shipped is by USPS if the shipment meets dimensional, weight and content restrictions. At most you will pay a $5 processing fee to CanadaPost plus applicable taxes. The exception will be if the shipment goes by Global Priority as USPS gives these shipments to a courier for delivery in Canada and the customs clearance charges are substantially higher.

UPS is by far the most expensive for customs clearance. FedEx and other couriers are better but usually there rates are higher so it's a toss-up.

If the shipment is large dimensionally, try to find a local trucker that makes routine runs to California. They are very often looking for back-haul to reduce their costs and the rates can be attractive. If it large dimensionally but very light-weight, be sure to tell them that you have top fill and the rates get even cheaper. Try to get these rates from smalller truckers or independants as they tend to quote on a shipment basis instead of a rate card from a head-office.

Good luck.

I ordered 3 boxes of hockey cards from the US. The total of my order was $380 USD. My cost when it got here? Another $90 bucks, GST, PST, CP fees, Brokerage fees. So If I do the math, and I am not good at math...you will be paying another $300 bucks approx.

Another? Bought a hat from Florida with my favorite Nascar driver on the cap. Cost was $29.99 USD. By the time it was at my door another $20 bucks came from my pocket, total cost?....$60 CDN. Broker, and it was shipped Airmail. Also, if you pick up your parcel or have it delivered via UPS or Fedex, be prepared for a broker bill to come for you in the mail. They usually use PBS Logistics.

If the package is not really big, sometimes the best "deal" is to get UPS Express, it does cost more than ground, but you save the very high brokerage fees.
