Income, Exchange rates, Free Shipping and GST

There has been a lot of talk recently about each of these topics.

My question… Is Free shipping an option with my listings?

First individual topics.

(1) Income in US dollars

For a seller annual income of $12,000 US makes one a powerseller. In spite of this requirement PS status is better guaranteed with an annual income of $15,000 US.

Personal goal is $20,000 US annual income

(2) Exchange rates

Five years ago … $1.40 CDN = $1.00 US

Oct-Nov 2007 … $0.90 CDN = $1.00 US only one year ago

Today $1.25 CDN = $1.00 US.

Things have changed and are changing quickly.

(3) Free shipping = shipping included.

Annual Income at $15,000 plus annual shipping at $5,000 US

With Free shipping annual income becomes $20,000 US, and annual income has suddenly jumped 33 %

(4) The collection of GST/HST

A Business with an annual income over $30,000 Canadian must register and collect GST/HST

Scenario I --- Only with an annual income of $20,000 and an exchange rate of $1.50 CDN = $1.00 US does income in CDN dollars become $30,000

Scenario II --- Free shipping with an annual income of $20,000 the sum of $15,000 + $5,000 reaches $30,000 with an exchange rate of $1.50 CDN = $1.00 US

Scenario III --- Free shipping with an annual income of $25,000 the sum of $20,000 + $5,000 reaches $30,000 with an exchange rate of $1.20 CDN = $1.00 US.

Conclusions.

(1) Incorporating Free shipping as an option adds income to the total.

(2) Free shipping with the right balance between ...income due to sales ... the cost of shipping ... and exchange rates .... can very quickly put a seller above $30,000 Canadian

If this is correct ... then... a seller who uses Free shipping can very quickly be in GST/HST collection territory.

Should you register?

You have to register for GST/HST if:

you provide taxable supplies in Canada; and
you are not a small supplier.

Small supplier

You are a small supplier and do not have to register if you meet one of the following conditions:

If you are a sole proprietor, your total revenues from taxable supplies (before expenses) from all of your businesses are $30,000 or less in the last four consecutive calendar quarters and in any single calendar quarter.

"In all cases, total revenues from taxable supplies means your worldwide revenues from your supplies of goods and services that are subject to GST/HST (including zero-rated supplies), or that would be subject to the tax if supplied in Canada"

Effective date of registration

The effective date of your GST/HST registration depends on when you exceed the small supplier threshold amount of $30,000 ($50,000 if you are a public service body). If you exceed the threshold amount in one calendar quarter, you are considered a registrant and must collect GST/HST on the supply that made you exceed the threshold amount. Your effective date of registration would be the day you made the supply that made you exceed the threshold amount. You have 29 days from this day to apply for registration.

However, if you do not exceed the threshold amount in one calendar quarter, but you do over four consecutive calendar quarters, you are considered to be a small supplier for those four calendar quarters and a month following those quarters. Your effective date of registration would be the day the first supply was made after you cease being a small supplier. You have 29 days from this day to register for GST/HST. .

Voluntary registration

If you are a small supplier and you are engaged in a commercial activity in Canada, you can choose to register voluntarily, even though you are not legally required to do so. If you register voluntarily, you have to charge and remit GST/HST on your taxable supplies of goods and services, and you can claim ITCs for the GST/HST you paid or owe on purchases related to these supplies. You have to stay registered for at least one year before you can ask to cancel your registration. For more information, see Cancelling your registration.

If you choose not to register, you cannot charge your customers GST/HST, and the GST/HST you pay on your business purchases becomes a cost for which you cannot claim ITCs. .

I now understand that the buyer pays me, the seller, to hire a carrier that will deliver the purchase.

Consequently the cost of shipping becomes a part of income.

And that puts this seller at over $20,000 and could very quickly go over $30,000, now that the exchange rate has changed and continues to fluctuate.

Pierre is right about the $30,000.

---------------------------------------------
The GST/HST charged by Canada Post was handled quite easily . However, with each passing month it has become more necessary than ever before to buy saleable inventory at locations that do charge GST.

GST/HST is only applied to purchases by Canadian buyers, making that increaed level of GST inputs an important consideration.

I ask the auditor

My question: My canadian sales where below 30,000, do i need a GST #
Auditors answer: No

Auditor asks: Did you collect GST?
My answer : No
Auditors reply: Good, you are correct and do not need to register for a GST#.

Im talking from 'real experience" not a cut and paste from the gov site. The site is right but your not reading it correctly into what was said earlier. Were talking about completely different things here, under "30,000" canadian sales. Sorry I disagree with bulldog pierre, so your saying I should have a GST# and the auditor was wrong?.

"Auditors reply: Good, you are correct and do not need to register for a GST#."

Either the auditor did not understand the question (may have misunderstood the "less than $30,000") or ....

Since you do not believe the information clearly spelled out on the CRA website, do yourself a favour. Call CRA (toll free), give them the facts (annual sales of taxable products $60,000 of which only $15,000 within Canada for example) and ask: do have have to be GST/HST registered?

Can I get that in writing, please! ;-) .

"taxable products $60,000" the word taxable indicates Canadian sales.

"taxable" does not mean Canadian sales.

taxable can be zero rated (taxable products taxed at the 0% rate when exported).

Why argue? .

Your right pierre, had me worried. I called and found out it was simply because I do fall into the small supplier category, thats why auditor didnt request castration err registration. Not a can of worms I wanted to open, sorry guys.
