Is the shipping fee something new? I don't go through ebay to ship so why am I being charged ?

I noticed that my fees seemed higher than normal this month so actually took a longer look at my ebay invoice. I noticed that I was being charged a shipping fee. Why would ebay do this? They have nothing to do with the shipping end of things. I am in Canada and any tracked package costs about $17.00 CAN (even a small package with earrings). So I charge $11 or $12 US. I still end up losing a little but I understand that shipping is subsidized somewhat in the US and my US clients often complain about the shipping fee, so I don't want to gouge - and I don't charge for any of my handling or shipping materials. Is there a way to avoid being charged this fee? If not I am definitely going to start selling somewhere else.

You can make paragraphs by hitting Enter when your thought is finished.

It's been around for a couple of years.

In part it was to bring eBay policies in line with Amazon, who have always charged sellers a fee on shipping.

In part it was to stop the practice of selling items for $1 and charging $99 for shipping, which infuriated buyers and lost eBay money on what was a $100 sale.

The fee is on your advertised (or calculated) shipping. It has nothing to do with how you actually manage the shipping.

I pay it, and mostly I use stamps because: reallynicestamps?

I even pay it when I use Free Shipping* because FS is just adspeak for "shipping costs included in selling price".

If you are using parcel services to ship, you should consider using Paypal labels.

First on some services you get a discount of 5%-17% off PO counter prices.

Second, any label you can buy has a number. In some cases that is a tracking number, which is helpful to you if you get an Item Not Recieved claim.

Some are just invoice numbers for Canada Post's bookkeeping, but those are also useful because they comfort nervous buyers and make dishonest ones think the purchase has been tracked.

I put those numbers into my feedbacks when I have them for just that reason.

If you don't want to do the Free Shipping, consider using Calculated Shipping rather than Flat Rate.

It feels more official. Seriously, this works.

It is more accurate.

And you are charging for packaging and handling. Those charges are in your asking price, whether you realize it or not.

*Free Shipping is a pretty good selling ploy. Especially if your customers are buying on their mobiles (less work for them), but most like the 'bargain' aspect.

Looking at your items, I really think you should consider Fixed Price and Free Shipping.

Which is cheapest?

A $10 item with $15 shipping?

A $15 item with $10 shipping?

A $25 item with Free Shipping?

Which is most likely to be attractive ?

Remember that while they are all the same price the $10 buyer is the cheapskate who will be unhappy with the shipping being higher than the selling price.

And Fixed Price with Best Offer gives you, in my opinion, the money you want, with the opportunity for your customer to get her 'bargain'.

Also 99cent auctions terrify me. Smiley LOL
