Are there additional costs from excise tax or duty when shipping to Canada from another country?

Duty may be charged on any item valued over $20 CDN (~$16 USD).

This includes items purchased in the USA but not manufactured there.

Used items are not dutiable.

Any item that is assessed for duty is also assessed for SALES TAXES (GST/PST/HST) whether duty is payable or not.

Sales tax may be charged on used items.

In addition the carrier can charge a fee for wrangling the shipment through customs. These fees range form ~$5USD for the Global Shipping Program to $9.95 for Canada Post to $25 or more for couriers like UPS.

If your purchase is coming from the USA or UK, the seller may be using the Global Shipping Program , which is a Seller Protection program with few benefits for the buyer. However, if the item is very large or very valuable, it may be cheaper to buy with GSP than to pay import fees on your doorstep.

Duty and sales taxes are the responsibility of the buyer. The seller is not required to know anything about foreign tax laws.

There's more, but I'm tired.

What stamps said with one additional thought. While used items are not dutiable, they are still taxable.

Edit: Oh wait, I saw she already said that. Next time, I'll learn to read before I reply.
