Chief Theresa Spence pulls out of meeting with Harper, spokesperson says

That's it. Call off the hunger strike, Chief Theresa Spence is refusing to meet with Stephen Harper.

The Attawapiskat First Nations chief, who launched a hunger strike 29 days ago to force the prime minister into a meeting with First Nation leaders, is now refusing to attend that very meeting.

Re: Little Chief Refuses to Attend meeting

Does "Political Correctness" demand the public remain silent if their views run contrary to said Chief's? Does expression of contrary views constitute "racism"

There are no black and white answer to that. Having read the media and the Internet one has to be able to see the ‘signs’ and they’re not hard to see for those with experience, either by having been there themselves, or by being on the receiving end of racism. However those engorged in racism do not see it because they are like a person who hasn’t had a bath in a year….they can’t smell themselves.

To begin with there is nothing wrong with asking about where money went or how it is spent, especially when there are people suffering and in need. Nothing wrong with that at all because we supposedly care about others ….. and nothing wrong with it from a taxpayers point of view. However the difference is in how it is presented and who says it.

Eg:

-  When comments are made in the media about Natives and incorporated in the comments are complaints about them getting everything they want or comments about them being on ‘welfare’, or comments about them not working or not paying taxes …..then you know there is a much bigger agenda there than simply ‘lets look at the books and try and help those in need’.

-  Then when there are comments about Natives and things said in the media like they should forget about the past and forget about what was done to them and move on…again that shows an agenda. There is no real interest in the situation on a Reserve…it’s all about getting rid of the obligations to the First Nations people. There is an old Jewish saying (I forget the exact words) that goes something like this……  ”The only people who can forgive those who have done them wrong are the people who it was done to. No one else, especially the people who did the wrong have any right.” Why? Well it is really simple…..everyone who is wronged, how it affects them personally is as varied as what was done to them. No one can say for instance …”Well Frank over there, his whole family was murdered and he got over it …..so you should too”. No one has that right!

-  Also when you read the words of people in the media and in blogs etc, you have to know who is saying them. When the research is done you find out that the person has a long track record of bigotry and racism. That says a lot about the hidden agenda.

-  Another very obvious giveaway is when there are subtle or blatant racist or bigoted comments in the media or in a blog and suddenly a group of people, usually always the same ones, suddenly come in to join in on the ‘fun’ or support he bigoted person making the original comments in the media. They’re easy to see and understand. As my grandmother use to say….’you are who your friends are’.

-  And finally there are those in the media and blogs etc who have openly said they are racists and proud of it. I’ve read them! Just came across one the other day as a matter of fact, one from 2010 but he hasn't change one iota. Those one doesn’t have to even research.

Understanding bigotry and racism is like fixing a Harley. If you have no experience with them or even motorcycles at all….you have no way of seeing where the problems are.

Rightly or wrongly, just judging from the comments left in response to this article, it seems that an overwhelming majority of respondents are unhappy with the unhappiness.  Mebbe they are all racists trying to subhumanize humans, huh?

According to news reports big Cheifs are refusing also. But that could change momentarily.

Re: Little Chief Refuses to Attend meeting

Mebbe they are all

Yep. Lots of them out there. Some people just can't smell themselves.

Based on the article from the Canadian Press I don’t see any problem other than reporting that Kennedy went bankrupt at one point. Not sure why that would be mentioned and not give specific details. Maybe they just needed to say something against him for the hyenas at the door.

People go bankrupt for many reasons from poor money management to illness where they can’t keep up with bills. 2011 in Canada there were 73,234 personal bankruptcies and 3,300 business bankruptcies. I was in bankruptcy in 84. I trusted someone and they made bad investments. So at the advice of my accountant at the time I filed for what was way less than even Kennedy. But one lives and learns and I never trusted anyone with my money again.

Kennedy’s bankruptcy of $23,380 is chicken feed compared to corporations and businesses that file for 100’s of thousands of dollars and because they are Ltd companies you can’t touch most of what they privately own or have put in other people’s names.

The rest of the article is pretty much straight forward with no problems.

As Kennedy said ….” If everyone is so concerned about the lack of documentation, then fine, come back, start contacting the suppliers, go through the banks, get into it in a little more detail”. So………..do it! A lot of people seem to be able to find out everything the ‘need’ for their rants in the media….but for some reason they don’t seem to have the time or interest to very possibly find out that there was nothing done that was wrong financially. But of course if they found that….then they wouldn’t have much to write about, or others much to talk about.

Re: Little Chief Refuses to Attend meeting

one who wants to find the signs - will find them everywhere - even if they are not there.

That happens. One sees it with a lot of bigots who for instance in the media want to find anything and everything they can against Chief Spence, or Native people in general.  However in the same token when signs are there about the bigots it is them who are the first to say what is seen about them is all….. ‘imaginary’. It’s like a lot of alcoholics or drug addicts who say “what! I don’t have a problem”!!! Bigots are the same….addicted.

Hummmm could you tell me a post on that board…date and time that has any racism in it? I would be very interested. I’ve read that site and my guess is you might be referring to one person. That person of course was brought up dealing with prejudice and bigotry aimed at him and his family….so maybe you can understand the anger, mistrust and sadness. Hate….well yeah I have read that on that media site, but hey, some people deserve it because they have dished it out to people for a long time.

Bigotry…wellllll you’re right in a sense there is bigotry on that site….bigotry against bigots.

Oliver Wendell Holmes, described bigotry in the following quotation: "The mind of a bigot is like the pupil of the eye; the more light you pour upon it, the more it will contract."

It is said that hatred poisons the soul…etc

Not necessarily. I personally have never been one to mix words. I think what really poisons someone is to keep it inside festering. I let it out. Much better. I’m a passionate person, not complacent, not someone who ignores what happens around me because it is convenient. I cannot in good conscience ignore certain things in life…especially bigotry and prejudice and of course racism. They are the tools of those who destroy others. I won’t let that happen if it is within my power to do something about it. Too many children only have to think of their childhood and remember these evils that destroyed it. And where did the children who persecuted another child learn it from?….parents, relatives, and the herd they associated with.

Skull and crossbones….no problem with it, happy wear it. To many it means death and or poison but the truth is….it doesn’t mean that at all…not at the beginning. It’s like the swastika….it’s true meaning in ancient times was ‘luck’ but due to WW2 the whole meaning changed and now most people see it only that way. There was a building at Dundas and Elizabeth that had two of them on each corner of the top of the building. The meant ‘luck’, but so many people complained that they were covered up. What a shame. Ignorance is often a passed on. I suppose it’s a good thing that Germany didn’t use the tire as a symbol, because there wouldn’t be a car on the road.

The same change in the meaning for the skull and crossbones is long lost. It goes back to ancient times and what it meant was mortality and resurrection, rebirth, enlightenment and the dual spirituality of male and female (the two bones). This is why it is often seen on tombstones and in Christianity sometimes shown on the bottom of the cross. Ancient groups used the symbol, and present day organizations incorporate it into their traditions to represent enlightment and spiritual resurrection.

So as Paul Harvey would say….’now you know’.

Re: Little Chief Refuses to Attend meeting

"Without education, you're not going anywhere in this world."  MalcolmX  I know personally, and have read of other exceedingly smart people who never completed High School, or even got to High School  (the late R.G. LeTourneau dropped out of Grade 8 I think).  Mr. Kennedy is no dummy; he appears highly intelligent, BUT, I think his "work" according to the results of the published audit,  fell far short of what an $850 / day salary should yield.

I believe, based on that audit, that he should be terminated, with cause, immediately, and a competent manager be hired to replace him.  People get fired every day, justifiably, for far less.   He failed miserably to do what he was hired to do.  That is just my opinion; it is, what I think.  His previous personal bancruptcy has zero bearing in my forming this opinion.  I have friends who have declared personal bancruptcy for trying to grow their businesses  too big, too fast.  Overly optimistic with their projections, and reality brought their dreams crashing down.

She simply wanted the Governor General there. My personal guess is one of the other chiefs or a lawyer told her that the GG should be there because of past treaties.

There is nothing criminal or disreputable about filing bankruptcy. To say that about Kennedy is to insinuate there is something wrong with them. Well if there is something wrong with being bankrupt then there is something wrong with these people….

Just to name a few.

I'm not defending Kennedy, but I am saying that so far what has only been proven is that his bookkeeping is bad. Two previous audits showed no wrong doing financially and one was overseen by a judge. Of course there '''suddenly''' was the one brought out by Harper's crew. Talk about suspicious!

“Time and time again does the pride of man influence his very own fall. While denying it, one gradually starts to believe that he is the authority, or that he possesses great moral dominion over others, yet it is spiritually unwarranted. By that point he loses steam; in result, he falsely begins trying to prove that unwarranted dominion by seizing the role of a condemner.”

Could you please provide a link to those two "audits".

In your world, does "audit" mean "audited by a chartered accountant" or do you have another definition?

Prior:   You do not seem to understand accounting at all.    My accountant would have a fit if I told her I spent  $1000,00  on  stuff without any supporting documents.    The indian tribe has many millions of dollars saying they spent it on stuff , without any support whatsoever.

Usually when that happens it is because  they have something to hide.

At $850.00 per day the big band manager was not doing his job.  He is either incompetant or  part of a theft cover up.

Lesser chiefs want everything  .

Chiefs demand fundamental change but can’t guarantee they’ll meet Prime Minister Stephen Harper

OTTAWA—First Nations leaders are demanding Prime Minister Stephen Harper commit to fundamentally changing the relationship between Canada and its indigenous peoples, but they could not guarantee their planned Friday meeting would actually take place.

“It is time we broke through the paralysis and endless broken promises and it is time to act,” National Chief Shawn Atleo told a news conference in Ottawa on Thursday that had been delayed by a day as the Assembly of First Nations continued discussing the demands they expected to put on the table.

Frustration over decades of disappointment was on display as chiefs warned Harper with an uncompromising tone to take this mission seriously or face the wrath of a young and energetic Idle No More protest movement prepared to disrupt the Canadian economy.

They also had a warning for Atleo, who late into the night Thursday was appealing to dissenting chiefs — including his main political rival — to focus on progress rather than logistics as they threatened to boycott the meeting unless it happened on their turf and their terms.

The Assembly of First Nations has come up with a list of short- and long-term demands that would lead to a restoration of the nation-to-nation relationship envisioned by treaties signed between indigenous peoples and the Crown in the 18th century and revamped for the modern day.

Re: Little Chief Refuses to Attend meeting

Canadian history:

"The goal of protecting Aboriginal lands from alienation was clearly evidenced in early legislation passed in 1850 by the then Province of Canada entitled -

An Act for the protection of the Indians in Upper Canada from imposition, and the property occupied or enjoyed by them from trespass and injury.

Section 4 of the Act reads:

4. That no taxes shall be levied or assessed upon any Indian or any person intermarried with any Indian for or in respect of any of the said Indian lands, nor shall any taxes or assessments whatsoever be levied or imposed upon any Indian or any person inter-married with any Indian so long as he, she or they shall reside on Indian lands not ceded to the Crown or which having been so ceded may have been again set apart by the Crown for the occupation of Indians.

The language of the Indian Act, as amended in 1876 also clearly demonstrates that there was never any intention to give preferential treatment to Aboriginal people, except in connection with protecting Aboriginal lands from alienation. For example,

section 64 of the Indian Act of 1876 provided:

64. No Indian or non-treaty Indian shall be liable to be taxed for any real or personal property, unless he holds real estate under lease or in fee simple, or personal property, outside of the reserve or special reserve, in which case he shall be liable to be taxed for such real or personal property at the same rate as other persons in the locality in which it is situate.

In commenting on the purpose of the section 87 Indian Act

tax exemption, the courts have similarly ruled that the purpose of the tax exemption is not to give preferential treatment to Aboriginal people, except in connection with protecting Aboriginal land and personal property from alienation. For example, in Mitchell v. Peguis Indian Band, the Court stated that the purpose of the exemption is not to cure poverty or place."
