New "Expedited Parcel USA" shipping label question (Abandon ???)

Hi all,

I am not sure about what box to check on the new "Canada Post Expedited Parcel USA" shipping label. There is a new pink section that says :

In case of non-delivery, return at :
SENDER EXPENSE ( ) OR ABANDON ( )

I don't want to pay the return for the cases when buyer refuses the package because of high customs fees (which happens from time to time). I always pay to completely insure the package, but I've been told that insurance no longer applies once package has reach the addressee's door, and is being refused.

If I check ABANDON, Canada Post will destroy the package. Not cool if package is insured for $500 (example). If I check SENDER EXPENSE, the package would be return to me instead of being destroyed, but I will have to pay $20+ to get it back and refund the buyer. Also not cool to pay from my pocket because buyer didn't read the custom fees warning (as recommended by eBay) in my items descriptions.

Which box do you check on that shipping label and why ? Any suggestion ? Thank you...

Yet another reason not to use CP.

Or to sell anything sizable that has to be shipped by that method.

I would say it is best to check "Return at Senders Expense", especially for expensive items that you won't want to lose lots of money on. You shouldn't pay duty on it coming back, as it is a return.

They leave us no choice, I guess, but to eat the 30 or 40 bucks it cost to ship the item. Then block the bidder, and then could you open up a case against them, especially if you have written clearly in your listing that "any duty or customs costs are the responsibility of the buyer"? Does anyone know?

Leaving it blank is another option. They have the same pink section on Xpresspost USA envelopes. I just had an unclaimed one returned (at no charge) and always leave both check boxes blank.

I think the online version of the Expedited Parcel US still has the same ground or air choice that has been in effect for quite a while but I never check anything there either. Haven't had an unclaimed parcel returned for quite a while (last summer?) but doubt if there have been any others.

Well, if the boilerplate message is used, eBay will not allow negative feedback referring to customs to stick.

I can't think of an applicable case against the buyer, but his actions might make for a good defense against a SNAD or INR case against the seller. Especially if the boilerplate were properly riveted down.

In the long run, I would want the $500 item back, even if it meant paying two way shipping, since the value of the item is greater than the price of the shipping. And I would have the item to sell again tomorrow.
