Start by not using caps when posting except for capitals. It means you are yelling and it is hard, if not near impossible to read.

Do you mail your items through CP?

Some people that sell small dollar items, self-insure. That means you add $1 in shipping for everything you ship and for the one or two that are lost or fraudulently represented as not being delivered, you have accumulated a small pool of money to cover the loss.

I ship with CP using Expedited and Express Post so I have tracking and insurance for everything I ship however other PSers may offer some additional suggestions.

Hi bgspsagems,

I ship mostly small items, which can go in a small bubble envelope, and the value is mostly under $100 Canadian. I ship using "small packet". Though it doesn't have a tracking number, it carries insurance for $100 Canadian, and is quite inexpensive. The package size and weight detrmine your cost, but for an envelope like mine, up to 500 grams, it costs $3.55 ground to the US, and $5.05 air to the US. International is slightly higher, but not much. For US deliveries, the ground is about 2-3 weeks, and the air is about 1-2 weeks. I give my clients the choice(to either save a bit, or have faster delivery). If the time goes over 30 days, you can then claim the insurance. The client may indeed lie about it, but as long as I can get the insurance, I dont at this point care. (For higher value items, I use a different method...either express or Expedited so that I can add insurance to cover the difference).

I checked out your auctions, and it looks like this would be fine for you unless you go over the $100 mark with a particualr card.

I also offer my clients(for those in a rush) Express, but once they see the difference in price, most dont want it.

Hope this helps!

I am shocked. I had no idea my small packets were insured. I have replaced about 5 in the past couple years without making a claim. How do you even go about making a claim if there is no tracking#. Can Canada Post verify if the item was delivered??

Re: PROOF OF DELIVERY

This was one of the changes implemented in January in an attempt to sweeten the price increase - apparently all you need is your receipt and CP will honour it. I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who has made a small packet claim under the new rules ... ?

Re: PROOF OF DELIVERY

Now I'm confused.

According to the CP reps and counter personnel I have asked, for shipments within Canada (other than XPressPost & Priority), we have only 2 classes of mail: LETTER (no tracking & no insurance without registration) or PARCEL (insurable, but with no tracking)...and that's it. The SMALL PACKAGE classification & rate applies only to items leaving Canada, which are not trackable, and to my knowledge (I hope I'm wrong) are not insurable unless they go EXPEDITED.

It sounds like there's some confusion here between PARCEL and SMALL PACKAGE. Someone who knows for certain please clarify.

Small package to US and International is insurable up to $100., but you are right there is no tracking feature....

That is what happens when you hire an MBA to develop system operations....

Actually, it's not that they are "insurable" -- they are automatically covered for $100 against loss or non-delivery (not damage as far as I know)! You DO need a receipt to prove you mailed it but I'm not sure how detailed the receipt has to be -- my PO claims that a cash register tape is sufficient but I don't think they've had to deal with a claim so ....????

And yes, doc_scribe, it's only small packets to the US and international that are covered -- NOT Canada!!!

Re: PROOF OF DELIVERY

We've made a claim for a small packet international package that never made it to our buyer. After waiting the prerequisite number of days for it to arrive, I called Canada Post and reported the missing package. I was asked the value of the package and if I had proof of the value of the package. I told them I had a hard copy of the Ebay auction in which it sold. They asked me if I had a receipt from the post office (I did) and asked me the address it was sent to. Although they never asked me to send any of that to them (I was fully prepared to do so if they asked), they processed my claim and had a cheque to me (the value plus the cost of shipping it) within 2 weeks.

I had a claim as well. Only about $20 or so. Same thing, never had to send anything in. Got my check within a week or so. Its considered to be on an honour system because tracking is not available. If its a small amount they just pay it out and don't hassle you.
