Paypal Must Be Offered When Listing Local P/U Only Auction

Just as the title states, I recently found out that in the new and improved venue, I must offer Paypal when I list an item for local pick up only. Thinking it was only a glitch, I tried listing again, same "error message". Got on with live help, was told it was a T & S issue, contacted T & S twice by email (no reply yet however, it's only been 2 weeks, I musn't be so demanding) Just got off the phone with eBay seller support who told me "yes you must accept Paypal for local pick only auctions.

I waited for the theme music from the Twilight Zone to start playing. No such luck. When I reminded the C/S rep how Paypal insists on an on-line tracking number in case of a claim of non-delivery, he verbally shrugged his shoulders telling me, "its policy now" When I asked him "when some savvy scammer gets wind of this, and purchases a larger ticket item from me, pays via Paypal, comes over to pick it up, then contacts Paypal a few days later claiming non-delivery, Paypal will side with me, right?" There was silence on the other end of the line. I asked the question again. More silence followed by " It's policy" To which I responded, "its insanity". He then asked if there was anything else he could "help" me with. I thought it best at that point to put the phone down. Much better for my head-space.

snoopwiz- INSANITY RULES!

We have a retail location- fully able to accept VISA/MASTER CARD, and DEBIT upon pick-up.

I don't know what to suggest as a work around. The first thing that comes to mind you already tried- DO NOT TAKE PAYPAL on local pickups.
This way- not covered by PayPal protection- you can't get a charge back reversal.

Maybe it's time someone create an ONLINE VERIFIABLE service so that the BUYER can sign an online viewable document stating that they have picked up the item. The again- who knows if it really is that person's signature?
BIG ISSUE- not well thought out- but there has to be a better way.

lina-mallows...The situation of a pick up only auction comes up just once a month or so, therefore, it isn't a daily worry. On all my other auctions, in the description, I do mention cash upon pick-up and buyers tend to be pretty cool about that. My category isn't really a high scammer type category so again, i am not overly concerned. But again, the reality is that eBay/Paypal have introduced a new policy, that flies in the face of their existing SPP policy yet when called up on it, they shrug their shoulders, stay relatively silent, and most likely wish I would just go away. And no, even though I am "forced" to click on the paypal accepted box while listing, I will continue to mention cash upon pick up only. Most local pick up customers are pretty decent people, happy that they actually can pick up (saving themselves $15 plus) in shipping costs. Explaining why cash only to the reasonable buyer shoul help them understand why. Should I ever get a negative for not accepting Paypal on a local pick up, well then, let the games begin........

The eBaY NOHELP agent you spoke with is a moron to say the less not to mention whoever is in charge of putting that requirement in place should have their freaken head examined.

We go out of our way to encourage all our buyers to pay with either cash payments, email money transfer (if applicable) or in some cases Bank to Bank Wire transfers for larger orders.

PAYPAL is used soley for all our smaller payments (ie: under $1,000) for the most part.

We would NEVER ACCEPT a paypal payment for an item being picked up in person.

CASH ONLY, period.

No I am with you on this one, it just comes ironic that anybody at PayPal can even consider the possibility of non-delivery on local-pickup.

Anyway, check their ID and have them sign the receiving documents. If it's good for CP, UPS and Fedex, should be good for you.

numero_1 Thats exactly what I have been doing. And I have not run into any problems. Yet. There is still the chance that someone will insist on PP, (it is after-all shown as an approved method of payment in my auctions) and should they be of devious mind, can scam me and the system in a hearbeat. Sure, I can refuse to sell it to them unless it's cash. Can you say "Big Red Donut" or perhaps "NPS?" And will I have a leg to stand on in either case?

Bump. Can't get a reasonable answer from live help. Can't get a reasonable answer from Silver PS phone support. This is obviously a major concern for me yet, the best response I can get is "its policy" with little or no regard to the ramifications. Sure would like to hear your take on this Miriam.

snoopwiz- The problem we are having is that we sell a FOOD item- that for reason of the Advance Notice of FOOD Shipment rules into the UNITED STATES (brought about via the BIO-Terrorism Act in the US) has made selling CHOCOLATE into the US a NO-NO. So- we only list CHOCLATE for sale in CANADA- for which shipping is based on weight, and distance. These are 1kg bags- so anyone ordering a LARGE quantity can achieve quite a substantial per bag savings, compared to shipping a single 1kg bag.
(though a 1kg BAG- when packed- weighs OVER 1kg- and therefore goes to the next weight increment for postage)
As we are in TORONTO- with a bricks-and-mortar store- pick up is so much simpler.

The problem comes not from eBay demanding that we accept PayPal- the fees are not that dissimilar to using the store's terminal- IT'S THE SHIPPING CHARGES we must list with the item, that are the real killer.

Shipping across Canada is so radically varied, and Canada Post's shipping tool is not reliable.

We would prefer to be simply contacted for SHIPPING charges- as it is easier to work through the options eBay does not provide. We offer FedEx (NEVER UPS!!!) GREYHOUND Bus- both station- and to the door service, both of which eBay does not provide for.

sure you have to accept paypal... all because
ebay / paypal latest policy:
GET THE SELLER!!! SCRUE THE SELLER !!! CHARGE THE SELLER !!!!!!!!!!!!

my only sugestion is that you clearly state in bold, red and oversized font that P/Us are cash only, and if winning bidder choose paypal payment you will have to send it via registered mail.

Kasha

Paypal Must Be Offered When Listing Local P/U Only Auction

Hey Kasha. Oh I do state in bold that cash only for local pick up. And to date, I have not had anyone insist on paying by PP on a local pick up. It is just the fact that by following eBay/PP rulings, it would put me in direct conflict with another of PP rulings, namely their SPP. This is so laughingly easy to see the potential of being defrauded yet, each and every eBay/PP employee I have confronted about it has had nothing more to say other than "it's policy"

So what happens the first time someone wins a local pick up auction, INSISTS on paying PP, I refuse, they dig in their heels, I dig in mine, they put a non performing seller claim against me. eBay going to side with me? What if I get negged by the same person? Perhaps all 1's on DSR's. Being a low volume seller, well, you know the rest.......

Sorry to harp on and on about this howver, would really like someone from the venue to respond and hopefully make some sense out of this.

Hi snoopwiz et al,

There have been a couple of changes in policy on the PayPal side that we're trying to get clarification on - this is one of them.

I apologize for not responding sooner - feel free to email me if you're not getting my attention on the boards. My email is miriam@ebay.com.

Thanks,

Miriam

IN Australia where Paypal is mandated. Paying in cash is an option for a pickup transaction.

Some have chosen to pay with Paypal.. I have charged a lettermail base rate and delivered the parcel as if I did the mailing.

I do ask for cash payment on local pickup... and I can see no reason for not accepting Paypal .

I am registered as a business in Manitoba and as such I should treat my local buyers and give an option of cash or credit card... the same as any other local B & M business.

What if buyer tries to defraud you on a big ticket purchase... Both seller and buyer are under the same police jurisdiction...

Just make sure contact information is correct.
