I agree that the phone number is needed. Apparently it is required by customs.
As long as a package fits into the mailbox, you can mail it from there. If I am mailing an expensive item with tracking, I often do go to the post office so that I can see them scan it and know for sure that it is in the system. With that being said,most Canada Post packages with a UPC code do get scanned somewhere along the line although I suppose it's possible for one to get missed.
