Once again, councillors go against the advice of city staff and cost the city big bucks.

I guess if you are doing business in this city, it pays to donate to election campaigns.

London is so corrupt it's hardly worth thinking about anymore. I use to like the city but it has sank like a rock.

That being said however, these under the table deals and biases happen all the time in most cities and provincial and federal governments of all countries and have happened for as long as we can remember. The entrance fee to politics is selling your soul.

Happens in every city and town. Donations to Municipal campaigns are not Tax deductible , yet every 4 years (used to be 3) the people running for Mayor managed to raise hundreds of thousands of $$$$ for their campaign. These people (well the majority as some are from family and friends) and not donating because they have extra money sitting around. At least at the Federal and Provincial level the donor is getting a tax break on their donation .

I never could understand people running for Mayor a job that pays about $80,000 a year (on average) manage to spend $200,000 and sometimes more trying to get that job.

I've never believed in the giving or accepting of money for campaigns. As soon as the money is accepted the politician owes that person or company and often the taxpayers pay for it later.

Political elections should run in a way that money is not a factor. Signs etc should have minimums that can be used and transportation the same. All of the expenses should be equal and put through an audit to make sure money is not funneled into candidate's accounts through other sources.

Most importantly all political hopefuls from the Federal to Municipal levels should be required to participate in open forums and debate in front of the people and these should also be broadcast on TV. How many debates is up for 'debate', but there should be at least 5 or 6 .....two or three of these should have prepared questions being asked by people in the political arena, while other debates should have questions asked by the 'people'.......and no filtering of questions by candidate's political advisors.

I, like other voters, want to hear the answers by politicians and put their feet to the fire when it comes to past promises or future promises. Put them through the wringer and see what comes out.

Then there is the media. They should be required to give equal news representation to all candidates and not just focus on the big 2 or 3 and in no way ignore any of the others. Reporting 'should be' balanced and it's far from it.

Oh.....and voting should also include individual votes for the Prime Minister or Premier.

Our political system needs changing and we can start at the beginning with elections.

WOW--i'm shocked but I agree on about 99%. I do not believe in debates as you get the same thing after the first one and the rooms get packed with supporters for each "team" and nothing really gets accomplished.

But as for money it should be 100% transparent on all fronts.

And i guess right now that should start with Pat Martin saying exactly who gave him money for his "defence" and settlement and how much???

MP Pat Martin received loan from NDP, donations from unions to help fund robocalls defamation suit ..... http://news.nationalpost.com/2013/09/24/mp-pat-martin-received-loan-from-ndp-donations-from-unions-t...

Actually Martin is rather impressive and I agree with him on many things with the one exception being his criticism of Svend Robinson for visiting the Palestinian Authority.

I think the members of those unions deserve to know exactly where their union dues are going! My wife has been in the union for some 26 years and in the last 6 years has seen her "estimated" pension drop almost in half. Where did all that money go???

And I thought you said that people only give money IF they want something in return! What exactly do the unions now EXPECT from Pat Martin !

I always thought that Members of Parliment had to declare gifts over $100 ? seems like all they have to do is say "I got a  gift over $100" and no need to specify how much the gift was or what the gift was.?

I remeber on here a big brew-ha-ha over a conservative member using someone's cottage for the weekend and the poo poo flew over why would he be using someone's cottage etc. etc. etc. But Pat Martin get given MILLIONS and thats fine????

Thats Funny

Unions I don't know all that much about when it comes to pensions etc. There was a time they were good, but I wonder more and more when it comes to their management. Workers will always be on the end of the stick.

Politicians, as far as I am concerned they would all look good on a raft in the middle of the Atlantic.

I use to care a lot at one time but increasingly I care less and less. Too much corruption, cheating, lying, manipulation and the list goes on and on in our society and the world in general. I'm at a point in my life now that as far as I am concerned the world can do whatever they want, but if they step on my toes, they'll see a side of me they wish they hadn't.

The Unions support Martin because they are under attack from all sides and they know they need every friend they can get.

If unions were smart they would get busy and put together funding for some media that would provide an alternative point of view to the all pervasive corporate-controlled media in our country that supprts corporate friendly Conservatives at a rate of 97% or so.

It is ludicrous that our "working class" targeted media (Sun News, Journal de Montreal) is the most blatantly right-wing, anti-working class news organization in the entire country.  Makes the head spin...

As for corruption, I agree it is out of control. So much going on that people don't even pay attention to half of it...
