Question for Pierre, Femmefan, or other seasoned sellers

I am curious as to some of the changes on Ebay, as I have been absent for a few years. in the cell phone cstegory, I am seeing one specific seller offering phones at a BIN price, with a fixed cost for shipping, which is fine. However, included in the title description, and the listing, is a cash pickup price, which works out to between $40-$60 less than combined listing and shipping prices. Is this not a violation of Ebay TOS? In addition, cah pickup does not give you any protection, if I remember correctly. As an example, in case I have not explained this properly, here is a sample listing I found:

http://www.ebay.ca/itm/COMPLETE-IN-BOX-IPHONE-3GS-8GB-FACTORY-UNLOCKED-BLACK-/230958466366?pt=Cell_P...

I dont care either way, just curious about this. Thanks in advance.

I don't see why it would be a violation, it's just total price minus shipping.

As surplusdealdude said, $229 is price including shipping ("free" always means "included in the price"). If you pick it up, there is no shipping. Therefore the BIN price is price less shipping.

It is slightly unorthodox to offer a pick-up price lower than BIN but it does not violate any policy.

The seller is trying to attract more buyers offering "free shipping" (shipping cost included in selling price) - yet recognizes that a buyer deserves a "break" if the item is picked up (and most likely paid in cash)

Actually, stupid me, I posted the wrong listing, one with free shipping. I meant to post one that showed shipping add on charges, like this one

http://www.ebay.ca/itm/COMPLETE-BOX-IPHONE-4S-16GB-BELL-VIRGIN-ROGERS-CHATTR-FIDO-/330839835327?pt=C...

But I think I understand, and thanks for the replies. Makes better sense now.

Once again, the key word is "cash" pick-up.

This "honest" sellers passes along the savings of receiving "cash" instead of PayPal.

cah pickup does not give you any protection, if I remember correctly.

If you don't pay by Paypal, and wise sellers do not accept Paypal for pickup sales, then you can't ask Paypal to refund your money.

On the other hand, eBay Buyer Protection is still available, it just doesn't include any financial settlement.

When you pick up an item, you can inspect it before handing over your money. That's a big protection right there.

You can still leave feedback.

You can still leave Detailed Seller Ratings, which are much more important to sellers than feedback.

Sellers can demand cash for pickup sales. Sellers can demand a pickup fee, as long as it is specified in the listing. EBay even has a spot for that on the Sell Your Item form.

Although for mail sales, sellers can only ask for electronic payments, buyers can offer other methods of payment. Sellers are not required to accept them. (I'll take you Canadian Tire money if you offer it!)

Funny you should mention Cd. Tire Money. Before they changed the payment options, you could offer any payment method, including that. One lady bought some xbox video games from me, and paid for half of the $40 charges in Cdn. Tire. Money. It was mostly 5 and 10 cent bills. The mail envelope reminded me of one of those gangster payoff type envelopes. But, was all there.
