I wonder what I should give the Canada Post Express Post guy who delivered a money order for several hundred US$ from a customer sent to my old address (moved 1 1/2 months ago).

The CP employee left it Wednesday at an empty house and of course without getting any signature and now the item is missing from the mail box.

Most of the Postal carriers make about $30,000 more per year than a bank teller who has 40 times the responsibility and puts in longer days.

UPS drivers in Canada are paid $48,000 per year which is about $28,000 more than the person serving you in a retail store who is usually hired as a part-time employee to avoid having to pay them any benefits.

I believe in the spirit of giving and Christmas but I must tell you there are one heck of alot of people serving you every day who make fractionally what these other people make and few of these others have any benefits.

I have seen in several cases where it has become something of an expectation to receive in certain jobs and no longer holds the meaning originally intended.

If your heart says to give because someone has helped you beyond what was expected during the year or you enjoy a special place for them then do so by all means, but to do so simply as a tradition, well .....

malcolm, relax.

The point is not only to reward the carriers, but to make a friend out of them.

CP employees are overpaid. Yep. But I still the ame carrier delivers my mail everyday. USPS driver has been very helpful.

I was thinking about a gift certificate from a larger store but felt it wasn't personal enough. I was going to give some homemade wine but didn't feel comfortable withthe mail carrier carrying a bottle around and with the USP driver having it in their truck.

What if they don't like coffer?

I gave mine a tin of gourmet chocholate carmel crunch scout popcorn from my scout troop!
It comes in a wonderful collectors christmas tin!
I gave them out to some suppliers too and everyone loved them! 😛

Malcom - Are you sure those UPS drivers make that much?

What about a road map, calendar and a clock? In case you didn't want to make a friend out of him...

Yes the base is $45,000 in Canada. I got that from one of the drivers that I knew. She was a single mom and had been driving for about 5 years or so with them. She wasnt bragging. She was content but like anyone else wishing it was more.

Then there is overtime for Christmas and other peak periods. The US drivers make more and get better benefits than the Cdn UPS drivers, but then again, UPS doesnt make its money in Canada from its deliveries, ony off its brokerage fees.

We have several city bus drivers with overtime pulling in OVER $120,000 per year (all city employee making over $100,000 per year have their salaries posted annually in the newspapers as it is considered to be public information.

In some Cdn cities, garbage collectors are making over $68,000 per year with full benefits.

I am sorry but I think we are making some terrible long-term mistakes that will catch up with us eventually. When a University-educated Bank Manager is paid around than $50,000- $65,000 maximum at a failry large branch with about 10 years senority and the garbage man is getting $68,000, where is the incentive to become educated?

We have grocery stores and other retail stores that are open 24 hours for re-stocking that are paying $28-$34 per hour for night staff without anything more than a grade 10 education and no exeperience, while a university or community college educated legal clerk with 10 years + experience working in a mid-size Ottawa law firm makes about $35 per hour.

At the same time we cant compete with offshore labour in manufacturing so all we are doiong is creating a society that is dependant upon increasing taxes to support our basic needs while loosing a place in international commerce.

I am now stepping off my soap box to head out to Toronto for the evening.

Okay, here is a concept, why isn't the postal clerk giving me a gift? (or even a card). I know I send all of my members and major clients a card at Christmas that sees me sending more than 500 annual Christmas cards. I am a customer of my post office, so why doesn't the clerk or the post-master there recognize me as a valuable customer with some kind of Christmas token?

In terms of UPS drivers, here in Northern Ontario and in alot of smaller communities in Canada, UPS has no brown trucks, but they are run by contractors.

The contractor or broker is paid by the piece, plus they have to pay for their own van. So, I don't think the $40+ starting salary doesn't hold true across the board...

Jeff, I've often wondered the same thing! There are a number of service people I pay hundreds (and more) to over the year - why am I expected to give them a Christmast gift too? Why not the other way around??

Actually, in fairness, our post office employees do leave us a little token something in our PO box at most occasions! They like to show that they appreciate the fact that our mail is always ready to go and correctly labeled!! A couple of them have even remarked several times that I probably know more than they do about PO rules!!! They're right.

I'm paying eBay over $1,000 this month in fees, what do you think I will get from eBay?

I'm paying PayPal over $1,000 this month in fees, what do you think I will get from PayPal?

The Post office gets several thousand from me each year, I got my gift already: A notice of a price hike January 17th.

Decided to get a "safe" gift by getting them a gift certificate from Best Buy.

Both were very happy to get them!
