Sounds like scam to me. I wouldn't pay outside of eBay.

Hi phyllis772010,
You're halfway there with this transaction - the fact that you're asked to pay with PayPal is somewhat reassuring. I'd recommend explaining to the seller that in order for eBay to accurately record the transaction, that you click on the Buy It Now or bid on the item on eBay first. Any legitimate seller wouldn't mind doing through the appropriate steps.
Thanks,

The seller can remove the "paid" indication. Or either you or the seller can mark the item as Paid.
After all, pickup items are normally paid cash and that's how eBay knows the transaction is completed.
Or if you pay directly by PP. he and you can put the eBay transaction number in the PP text box just in case.
Don't worry about the eBay warnings. Only the seller has to act on those. If you paid and he shipped there is no problem.
If you paid and the item does not arrive (very rare) you can apply to PP's Resolution Centre. They have very strong Buyer Protections.
