Should I calculate my shipping as the furthest distance to avoid the unpleasant surprise I received at the PO this morning? (twice as much)

I'm a new seller in Toronto.

Should I list shipping cost as the furthest distance from me (say California) to avoid nasty surprises at the PO. and pocket the difference if the destination is closer. Will that hinder sales? I'm shipping regular Canada post parcel.

You should use calculated shipping, that way each buyer will see the shipping cost to their location. This will avoid the unpleasant surprise you received at the post office. You will need to know the size and weight of the packed item in order to use calculated shipping. It is also helpful to have a metric postal scale and tape measure.

It cannot be over-emphasized that Canada Post went metric in 1974 and that any Imperial measurement used will be an approximation.

You can buy a Starfrit metric scale at Canadian Tire. They often go on sale for $10 and are just fine.
