Did I miss the info. or will we find out tomorrow ?

from Wed. discussion

"We would like to know more about the Sept. 19 Buy Canadian Promotion.

Namely, what it might entail and whether certain items will be featured over others and, if so, using what criteria selected by ebay. http://community.ebay.ca/t5/eBay-News-and-Information/Rumor-department-eBay-ca-September-sale-event/...

Thanks,

Maureen

Hi Maureen,

All Canadian sellers will be included in this, whether they list on eBay.com or on eBay.ca. The only criteria is that the items be located in Canada."

Just wondering what "this" is that I'm sure to be included in.

Rather useless.

Down the side listings of Categories, there is nothing for Collectibles and if you click on the photo of Collectibles & Art you only get Art.

This makes the search an annoyance more than anything else.  Sad, as this was a perfect opportunity to get Canadians shopping from Canadian sellers.

Not exactly Canada search friendly since there are a number of ways to get lost.

To get Collectibles -- you type "Collectibles" into the search bar and you get the collectible subcategories on the left side.

You are a bit too much of cynic, since the promo is for items located in Canada -- not for items that are listed for sale in Canadian $.

But it will only be effective if it's advertised somewhere other than on eBay.CA

But doesn't this marketing scheme apply to items located in Canada that are listed anywhere (including on .ca in $CDN)?

Many Canadian sellers took eBay's advice and remained on .ca and are now listing in $CDN, probably using many of the free .ca listing promos eBay has been throwing around lately.  Obviously a lot of those sellers would previously have been listing in $USD on .ca to appeal to the US market and are likely now seeing their sales drop as a result, which I think is the whole reason eBay concocted this event.  The only question is whether this is a campaign to get anyone, anywhere, to buy Canadian products, or to get Canadian buyers to purchase from fellow Canadians.

So what I meant by being cynical was that with all the free listing promos specifically meant to encourage more $CDN listings, the timing of this "Canadian promotion" seems to me rather suspect -- laughable in fact. In other words, eBay got themselves into another pinch through their own decision-making.

Doubtless eBay now has thousands upon thousands of $CDN listings that aren't selling, and I think that's the reason behind this rare and unusual (not to mention virtually useless) "Buy Canadian" event.  Which is not to say eBay doesn't also have Canadian sellers listing on .com (or other sites) that could benefit from this event as well, but I'd bet that those $CDN listings that aren't moving are the bigger problem.

If this promotion is intended primarily to appeal to Canadian buyers to buy from Canadian sellers, in some patriotic sense, as I said earlier eBay should have been doing something along this line years ago.  The fact that it comes on the heels of the switch to $CDN is more than a coincidence I think.  Yes, the cynic in me says eleventh-hour management and patch-up seems typical of eBay.

By the way, why bother doing this sort of thing for a one-day event?  By the time buyers notice, it's gone.  If eBay is going to run these "Buy Canadian" promos, it should be for at least 3 days in a row, preferably a week.

Well, I think I've answered at least one of my earlier questions: the banner reads, in part: "Items Located in Canada.  No Duties or Import Fees."

Clearly then, targeted at Canadian buyers to purchase from Canadian sellers (or at least sellers shipping from Canada).

BTW, it's still shown today.  Does that mean a 24-hour one day event, or an event that started Sept. 19 and will carry on?

It's not much good to me anyway.  If you're selling mass-produced consumer goods, you may be in luck.  There appears to be no main/highlighted category for "vintage".  After filtering down to a very specific search under the "clothing & accessories/women" main category, I don't see any of my vintage listings.

A great suggestion but, impossible to do as they have already claimed Sept 21 as "Buy Tuvalu" day.

Sometimes the only way to discover real information about eBay is to work backwards, through analysis and deduction...

For example, I took a closer look at listings in this "Buy Canadian" event that fall under one of the categories in which I sell.  I filtered results until I got down to a very specific search result (of about 160 items, 3 or 4 pages' worth).

On page 1 of the search results, I noticed that a store-owner seller with less than half my FB score and a fairly low sales volume (5 per month) had 9 of the first 15 listings, and occupied 3 of the first 5 spots, along with one other low-FB, low-volume seller.  A couple of other higher-volume non-store sellers were mixed in with the listings between the #6 and #15 spot.  One of my items -- and one only -- was listed at #16.

This seemed odd.  What was it that gave such prominence to seller #1?  I checked the seller's recent sales, which weren't very impressive or numerous, certainly no better than mine.  She was a TRS, but so am I.  She has a store, but so do I.  She has 100% positive FB, but so do I.  I have a zero defect rate (I don't know about hers).  She was selling similar items to mine, listed in $USD (as I do) at comparable prices and shipping, and had about the same number of total listings for sale.  It was the same for seller #2.

It then occurred to me to click on the store icon of seller #1 and #2 -- voilà, there it was.  These two sellers each had the "new" store format.  I then checked down the list and these 2 sellers occupied, between them, the overwhelming majority of the listings on page 1 of the search results, despite the fact that there were a number of other comparable (or better overall) sellers, all of whom either had the old store format or no store.

Well, well.  I can only infer from this that, all other things being equal, eBay's search engines favour new format store owners.  I'm also wondering whether this preferential visibility also applies in general, i.e. not just for this "Buy Canadian" event.  This is apparently critical information that eBay has neglected to mention to "old style" store owners.  But why?  You would think they'd tell us in order to entice us away from the old form.

As those of us who have kept the old style store design know, there are features that are not available in the new style stores, such as Promotion Boxes, Store Pages, etc., which allow us to customize our storefronts.  This is clearly something eBay no longer wants with its new, one-size-fits-all store design.  Is eBay hoping that many of us still stubbornly clinging to the old style will die off and they'll get rid of us by attrition before they make the new format mandatory?

One search raises lots of questions.

Snort.

The Buy Canadian event is ongoing. I see it at the top of my page and on the front page. I assume it will stick around until the weekend at least. We can always ask R tomorrow at Board Hour. I don't doubt he is ready for an onslaught of abuse over this.

They really dropped the ball by not having that promotion one day earlier and calling it "Buy Tuvalu-esday".
