Unable to browse around...

I hadn't logged in for a while... Yesterday, I needed [something] so I decided to eBay it...

Problem: Now, the site is jam packed with poorly script advertising... I have a quad-cores CPU with 8Gb ram and I'm not even listening to music or doing anything else than browsing... I updated Java and Flash last week... Yet, Windows Task manager report that this single tab browser is consuming 3Gb+ ram and 60%+ of CPU resources... Though was a bug or something, so closed it and tried again, but getting the same readouts after less than 2 minutes browsing... Yesterday, I had a similar experience while browsing, it was laggy as hell, but I still could make searches or such. Now, today, it's a nightmare...

I have the same amount of ram and I'm not having that problem. Is there another program running in the background that might be affecting it? Or perhaps there is some sort of malware on your computer that only affects you on ebay?

Which browser are you using?

If you have a Windows computer, try the following one at a time and see if it helps.

For a very good free tool to clean up your computer, download CCleaner from Piriform. Run it before and after each browser session. CCleaner by defaults will remove some useful cookies that are used to store some internet site preferences you might have. You might get prompted again when you go to an internet site. No problems with eBay.

One change you should make to the default settings in CCleaner is to delete information in the past 24 hours. By default CCleaner does not delete this. If you are having issues, you need to clean all of the cookies and cache and especially the current ones since they might have the problem..

You can download the free version of CCleaner here

https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download

Choose the free version on the left, not the trial version on the right.

I have run CCleaner for 10+ years now and have had very few issues with browsing eBay and the Internet. Computer has been responsive and fast.

Another free tool you might want to have is AdBlockPlus. It is a browser addon that blocks most annoying ads on eBay and other sites. This will speed up your browsing since eBay is full of third party moving ads today.

https://adblockplus.org/

Just download and install it. It updates automatically so you never do anything to maintain it.

Next, you might want to download and install a free malware program to check you computer for stuff that might have been installed on your computer. This program is one of the best for finding malware. A few months ago some eBay members have posted that issues they were having with their computer with eBay were fixed by running this program.

https://www.malwarebytes.org/mwb-download/

Download the free version on the right. Run this program once and then every month or two as needed.

Last, I would recommend having more than one Internet browser installed on your computer. I use FireFox browser as my default browser and it has worked well over the years. I also have Internet Explorer installed and up to date but Internet Explorer usually has more issues with eBay and other sites so I rarely use it. I have Google Chrome browser installed as a backup browser but it has had more issues with eBay and PayPal over the years compared to FireFox. These browsers are all officially supported by eBay. I also have Opera browser installed which I find is a good Internet browser but not officially supported by eBay.

Do the above one at a time and check if they fix your issue. Still run all of them but try to find which fixes the issue. Using all of the above regularly should make your computer run faster and better than before.

I hope this helps. Post back what you did and how it went so that other readers know if it helped.

I am running the above on an old HP desktop Intel 3 GHz dual core CPU with 4 GB of RAM. I also have the same running on an old Windows XP laptop with a single core 3 GHz with 2 GB of RAM. So older slower PCs can still perform well on eBay and the Internet.

On my backup browsers (Google Chrome and Opera), I do not have AdBlockPlus installed so I can see how eBay runs with all of their ads. I still have no real lag or performance issues when I browse on eBay with those browsers.

In order:

PJCDN2005:

I'm using Firefox. At the time of these readouts, I only had Firefox, my firewall and my anti-virus working.

Pocomocomputing:

Already have CC and I run it on daily basis. As for malware, I use MBAM on a weekly basis. No malwares found as of yesterday.

I also use Firefox as default browser, and switch is IE when I need a second browser.

Regarding your second post:

I used to use Windows XP as well, but needed to upgrade to Windows 7 x64 because some software required it. But Windows XP, is more reliable by far, and I would switch back if I could... I cant install ad blocking at the moment, will try tomorrow ...

But, still every time I browse around, there are 4 to 7 ads, most of them in HD with Hi-Res anims in them... Earlier, in the other tab, there were: One animated Equifax ad (HD), one animated CIBC ad (LD), one small banned style add, and one unanimated eBay ad (From those ads I get, you are most likely guessing I'm Canadian). It just refreshed, however, while I was typing. Now, I have one Little Burundy HD animated ad, and four other random ones. But when I first browsed tonight, I had 3 HD animated ads running, and, in windows task manager, I could see Firefox memory consumption growing more thant 100mb per second (that's faster than the loading rate of many games I play!) until it reached about 2Gb... Still, 3 HD ads running at the same time (in loop)... I know very few PCs on with you can watch 3 HD movies at the same time and not experience any lag, so it's just unbelievable that eBay expects users to browse around happily like this...

Sorry for the typos, had a busy day...

It helps but not that much... Ads arent displayed, but they are obviously loaded and cached. as, at the moment, I merely logged in and started shopping, and my two tabs Firefox session has already inflated to 600mb, and Firefox uses about 35-40% of the CPU resources...

Also, I ran MBAM, Kapersky, and other similar softwares, and all were negative... As for Firefox settings, it's all default, with very limited plug-ins, none intended for eBay. Tried at work as well, and Firefox gets the same hyperinflation problem, though 16Gb ram and a better CPU help it getting unnoticed, so I'm wondering if it's not simply that my geolocation gets me the worst ressources wasting ads...

Now, I've been browsing for less than 10 minutes, and Firefox is 1.1Gb large in memory, eating about 45-50% of CPU resources...

I've been online for a few hours, have 4 ebay windows open and one other widow but Firefox is showing at less then 300k. Are there some programs that are running in the background that you can stop from coming on when you start up....perhaps that would help?

Using FireFox browser with 9 tabs open right now to different windows of My eBay, Selling manager and forums (ca and com) for the past 6 hours. Also running a hard drive backup program over my Ethernet to a Network Storage drive but this program slows or stops while I am active in other windows.

When I start my computer, I am at 34% of RAM used (4 GB installed), right now with all open and running above, I am at 59% RAM used with low CPU usage (0 to 25% dual Core 3 GHz Intel). So at most FireFox with 9 open windows is using 1GB of RAM. I have a Solid State 240 GB hard drive so that helps with overall computer speed (but not as much as I expected).

Excellent response time, no lag, no issues. Runs like this all day as far as I can remember. I tend to get sloppy with more open windows that I should but FireFox and eBay always worked well for me. Even when I had Windows XP running on a single core 3 GHz CPU with 2 GHz of RAM a year ago.

I do have AdBlockPlus installed as mentioned before.

No idea why you are getting high CPU usage and high RAM usage on FireFox and eBay.

Does it happen on eBay.ca and eBay.com sites? I read in the forums once that ebay site made a difference for some issues. Probably because malware targets ebay.com (not saying you have malware as you use MBAM regularly).

Try another browser like Goggle Chrome or Opera and see if high CPU and RAM is still happening..

Regarding the eBay portal, I'm getting the same for both eBay.ca and eBay.com, and I'm getting same ads for both... Actually, besides some texts and button labeling, it's pretty much the same...

I just killed Firefox in Windows task manager as it was using 55+% of CPU resources and was over 800Mb (800 000kb) large. I only search for a audio card, and opened a few tabs that I closed after couple seconds... Now, after launching it again, Firefox is using 5% CPU and less that 300mb, which is still pretty big for a 3 tabs browser... And I'm getting the same readouts on 3 different PCs using Firefox... I'm seriously thinking that would be caused by advertisings intended for Canadian users...
