Limited - very limited range of products.  Mine (postage stamps) are not eligible.

Now, take a look at the prices!

eBay is suggesting that buyers pay more on eBay than regular retailers!

Does that make any sense to you?  Is this a message eBay wants the world to know?:  Buy here and pay more!

Yep - it's crazy, but nothing eBay does surprises most of us anymore.

To be fair-- Remember the Cabbage Patch Doll craze of the 1980s?

Parents were paying well over the retail price to resellers who had managed to buy THE toy of the year.

So while eBay is suggesting to sellers that they will get a better price for their item than if they sell it elsewhere-- at a flea market or on The List, I suppose-- the reason they can is because the items are so hard to find at the usual places.

That round roboty thing (Sphere-O, really is that the name? Lame.) is all over my FaceBook, which is heavily populated by geeks of all ages. It's from the new Star Wars movie which won't even be out for another month.

I don't know much about the other toys.

"to be fair-"

This is eBay.  What does fairness have to do with it?

I remember the Tickle Me Elmo craze. Smiley Very Happy   A retail clerk in New Brunswick was knocked down and trampled when

customers rushed to get one of the toys.  I think these kinds of situations present a good opportunity for parents to

teach their kids about economics and give them the even-more-valuable and longer-lasting gift of learning to delay

gratification.

And they're right, too.  Smiley Happy

I saw this promo advertised earlier this month, and actually laughed out loud.

Is this what eBay has come to?

I sell toys at Christmas! In most cases buyers pay more than at retail but the promo where ebay is trying to recruit people to purchase HOT ITEMS to resell on ebay is questionable at best. A lot of regular everyday types who don't have a handle on how this place (or at least a volatile category like mine) rides tidal waves on a regular basis are going to end up wondering what the heck they've gotten themselves into. Something you paid $10 for might be worth $100 to one person one day and not worth $2 the next, depending on how plentiful it is and who needs it and where. It is both a gamble and an art. And not for the feint of heart.

For example, I am going to have to start giving away Frozen dolls soon. Last summer and fall, they were scarce. By Christmas, they were popular but still hit-and-miss to find. This Christmas, every retail store is stacked to the ceiling with them. Literally. They hold no value on ebay. Zip zero zilch. I will be chasing people down my front street, shouting, 'Hey, you! Take a Frozen doll. Free!' And then throw it at the back of their head as they run away.

This is not a smart area for people to get into. It's only going to leave them bewildered and annoyed.

You'll have to imagine me stating the following in the voice used by the Comic Book Guy from The Simpsons:

"THAT is the brand name. The ROBOT is called BB-8. Now where did I put my R2-D2-shaped Ding Dong? Oh yes, it's right here, next to my limited-edition Star Wars Kraft Dinner. Lord Vader, how you'd be rolling over in your crispy grave if you saw what Star Wars had become.....'
