Although I don't think I'm anywhere near qualified to answer this question, I'll give it a shot, but I think eBay does try to protect sellers. It's all in the eBay terms.
eBay User Agreement States: sub-headingPurchase Conditions "You are responsible for reading the full item listing, including any instructions the seller provides, before making a bid or commitment to buy. Unless otherwise stated, by making a bid or commitment to buy an item on eBay, you are committing to buy the item from the seller listing the item. If you make a commitment to buy or your bid is the winning bid or is otherwise accepted, you enter into a legally binding contract with the seller and are obligated to purchase the item."
this is from eBay Canada, but the user agreement in the US and other eBay sites is basically the same. What I think it means is that if a seller makes a detailed description and list terms clearly, the buyer is obligated to follow those terms, or not buy from that seller.
If you're asking if eBay goes to bat for sellers, I don't think so, because it's my feeling that eBay believes buyers are their customers. So it's up to the sellers to list their items properly with full details so that buyers can't really, file a dispute unless they are just trying to defraud the seller, and in that case a seller can (bend over and take it) or fight it.

That's a very general statement.
If you provide some details, maybe you could get an answer.

This is the three negatives you got from the non-paying bidder?
Open an Unpaid Item Dispute.
Unless he pays up, he will get a Strike for each unpaid item. Strikes make it more difficult to bid on eBay since so many sellers have an automatic Block against deadbeats.
You will get your selling fees back on the items.
You can have the negative feedbacks removed, since no feedback (negative or positive) can be left after a Dispute is resolved.
Add the bidder to your Blocked Bidder List.
Go to your Seller Preferences and Block bidders with Strikes. Also bidders who do not have active Paypal accounts.
