Why would a Canadian seller require another Canadian to pay in U.S. dollars?

Hi,

I had a question that someone here may be able to help me with. I have been noticing on E Bay.ca that some Canadian sellers

expect U.S. dollars on items bought by Canadian buyers.

My question would be why they are allowed to do that?

Thanks!

Because:

(1) it's legal, as along as the seller and buyer agree on the currency to be used, anything can be used for a sales transaction.

(2) eBay.ca allows sellers to list in their choice of CA$ or US$

Many Canadian sellers are marketing towards the USA not towards Canada

(3) eBay.com allows sellers to list only in US$

Many Canadian sellers also list on eBay.com not just eBay.ca

If BEFORE BIDDING you contact the seller and ask if you can pay in Canadian dollars, she might agree.

Or she may decide you are going to be too high maintenance and Block you.

The amount you see in US dollars will be fixed, but if the seller does bill you in loonies, the exchange rate may be in your favour or run against you. It varies several times a day, and is never what the newspaper or even xe.com says.

As a Canadian seller we opt to list and sell in US$ as a much larger percentage of our buyers are American vs Canadian. We found when we did list in Canadian $ our USA sales dropped like a rock, as a Canadian seller we have seen an actual increase in Canadian sales as a result of the GSP (Global shipping program)  but it still doesnt justify us changing to cdn$
