Why would someone put an item up for sale with Buy it Now and Best Offer.

Why would someone put an item up for sale with Buy it Now and Best Offer, then when you make an offer, they only come back with their Buy it Now price?

What was the Buy-It-Now price? What was your offer?

If your Best Offer was low, you probably insulted the seller with too low an offer. And they may have blocked you on their blocked list.

When I sold items at a swap meet or a garage sale years ago, buyers would offer $5 on a $25 item. I would just raise the price from $25 to $30 as my counter offer. This would shock the potential buyer and they would either get serious or move on. If they still offered a ridiculous low price, I would raise the price again.

My thoughts exactly.

I get other dealers lowballing me all the time any time I put "Best Offer" on an item. A lot of the items I sell are very hard to come by in Canada and I purchase a lot of things from the US at auction and have them shipped up. It's a huge amount of work/effort and I spend a great deal of time at it sourcing and acquiring stock. When I get a seriously insulting lowball offer from someone who is obviously another dealer I will send them a very nice note explaining that there offer is too ridiculously low to even consider and telling them if they want to come back with a "serious offer" I will look at it. If they don't get back to me at all they get blocked. I'm not going to reward someone who is too lazy to source their own product by letting them take my hard earned profit.

If I get a really low offer from someone who doesn't appear to be a dealer (hard to tell as some people have multiple accounts but what can you do) I will very nicely let them know they are too low and send them a reasonable counter. Again, if I get nothing back from them at all they get blocked. I'm not trying to be mean but if you can't be bothered to be polite...

Buyers really should consider what they are doing when making an offer. If you have researched the market value of an item don't send an offer that is half of that just because you think you might beat the seller out of it, as most time you really will just insult the seller and all of his hard work. Most sellers will negotiate somewhat if they have the room but at the end of the day, they are a business that needs to make profit. If your budget can't afford a reasonable value for an item it's probably best to wait and save a few more pennies than to send an insulting offer to a seller whom you may want to do business with down the road, especially if he/she has unique, hard to find items.

Just my 2 cents.

All the best.

You have some very lovely items.  And no doubt they take a long time to acquire and describe.  I would be upset too if someone wanted to take advantage of my hard work.

Re: Why would someone put an item up for sale with Buy it Now and Best Offer.

Multiple possible reasons:

1) seller took the offense in low offer. But many will just ignore such offer and let it expire although some sellers may feel they are showing lowballer the finger if they use same price or lower it by penny.

2) they use Best Offer on Free Shipping items for multi-purchase or multi-quantity buyers shipping together

3) price-match policy, where you show them competitor with lower price and they would take your offer

4) apply discounts, coupons and store credits this via Best Offer feature

I just deal with lowballers by using the auto decline for offers below a certain amount.  That is usually an amount below what I will settle for, but high enough that the offer is reasonable serious and there is room to counter.
