eBay Launches International Classifieds Websites

We would like to announce our launch of online classifieds Web sites in select international markets. Launched under the brand Kijiji, which means “village” in Swahili, the Web sites offer people in the same city a convenient way to meet, have fun, share ideas, and trade various goods and services.

Kijiji is now available in more than 50 cities in Canada, China, France, Germany, Italy, and Japan. In Canada, Kijiji is available in French only in Montreal and Quebec City. From building friendships and trading large appliances to talking about the city’s best restaurants or looking for a babysitter, Kijiji is designed to help people connect.

We encourage you to visit the Kijiji site, post a classified, and tell us what your experience has been. Is it easy to use? Do you like the site? Would you use Kijiji?

First, all you people complaining that Kijiji is in french only in Canada, please look again, it is also in english.

Second, why make it in french when you people can't read in french ... well what do you do with the people that don't read english???

Holy cow, did craigslist put that big a scare in to eBay that they had start kijiji to try and run them out of town? I swear eBay aspires to be the Wal-Mart of the online world...by the way, Wal-Mart sucks. X-(

This site is for both FRENCH and ENGLISH .

I have been using this site to post ads on for over a year now and it has always been in english !

Maybe you guys just aren't using it right !

I think Kijiji is a wonderful site for local listings. You can list, sell and post numerous pictures of your items... and it's all FREE of charge.

I think it is wonderful and amazingly helpful when you can't always afford to list on Ebay.

Only about 10% not 31% are actually french only in Canada !!
We Canadians have french FORCED on us by a bunch of spoiled brats that are illiterate and prevent the rest of the people living in Quebec from learning to speak CANADIAN and don't even fly our flag !!

So I started using Kijiji a while ago - for local business.

Recently I used new function "FEATURED AD" which costs 10$/week of your ad being displayed on top of its category (Photography in my case).

However, over 24 hours passed since I paid kijiji for the service... and my ad did not yet appear.

I've made request to help me out with this issue, all I get from Kijiji are senseless automated responses, telling me that sometimes kijiji will delay random ads for a period of 24 hours - then post them. More then 24 hours passed, there are NO OTHER featured ads in that category - my ad is yet not displayed, I never got an answer from kijiji support group, well besides those automated messages telling me " To check out the FAQ's on the mean time"... Bravo Kijiji, Bravo eBay.

I haven't noticed many people using the new featured ad. I think the price for it is way too high. I only use kijiji because it is free. When I'm waiting for ebay to have a listing promotion I put my stuff on kijiji in the meantime. If it sells before the next listing promotion great. If not, I list it on ebay.

But, how does someone new find it ??
Last month there was a link on My ebay,
Now it will be very difficult, if not unnoticed by others.
Is there any reason to make it almost impossible to attract new people to kijiji ?

I'm surprised kijiji exists at all since ebay makes no money from it. I list the same things on kijiji as I do on ebay and prefer it to sell on kijiji as it saves me the ebay fees and it's usually local pick up so no packing and shipping is involved. Ebay probably doesn't want anymore buyers and sellers finding out how great kijiji really is.

I was just on Kijiji and am disgusted to see the number of animals that are listed that people are selling. You have people on there who are looking for free animals...people who obviously are only looking for animals to breed the heck out of. This is not impressive and it sickens me to see that a person can have their animals for sale on this site. It makes me think twice about ebay as a reputable place to buy things. Not impressed.

We tried Kijiji a while back and found it as glitchy as eBay if not more so. It was a pain.

Used craigslist with moderate success but the best for local sales has been our local site called Used Victoria.com
Totally user friendly + free.

We listed everything that didn't go at our garage sale and got more for the stuff than we asked for it on the garage sale.

We had a 100% sell thru rate with it and didn't have to pay a penny, People just emailed us for an address, came to our house and gave us money. Just wonderful!

I have had a lot of success on craigslist, and none at all on Kijiji. Just yesterday I sold 2 notebook computers and an inflatable raft because of an ad through craigslist.

I live in Summerland, BC, between Kelowna and Penticton. Basically this site does nothing for me because there's no listings for the smaller towns. Penticton is the next closer to me than Kelowna. I'd still like to see some sub-categories for Summerland, Peachland, etc. Many people have recommended Craiglist to me although I have not used it. .
