Isn't this the one with the Greek philosopher running down the street naked shouting "Eureka!"  ?

If you can determine the amount of the gold in the metal by simple displacement, then you have not changed the item, and you could return it (with Delivery/Signature Confirmation) for a refund of your original payment.

But if you change the product, say by melting it down, then PP will not refund.

You might, possibly, be able to do a credit card chargeback, but frankly, this does not seem like a reasonable source for you.
