No one, including the seller can see your maximum bid.
The winning bidder may have bid tens or even hundreds of dollars more than you did, but if you were the high bidder, his maximum bid would be processed at one increment over yours.
For example.
You bid on a $10 opening. Your bid is $11.
The bid is to you at $10.
I bid $20.
The bid is to me at $12-- one increment more than your $11 maximum.
You bid $13, then $15, then $25. At last the bid returns to you at $21-- one increment more than my $20.
But.
Neither of us knew that Fred had bid $100 through an online sniping service. He did that five minutes after the listing was posted, days before either of us noticed the auction. Fred really wants that widget.
Six seconds before bidding closes, the sniping service activates Fred's bid and he wins at $22.
But he would have gone to $100 if bidding had continued or if you had bid $99.
Or you would have won if your real maximum was $101.
Bid once.
Bid your maximum.
Some will also say, bid late.
As it is, if you had bid your maximum, the winning bidder paid too much. What a sucker!

I don't snipe myself, either manually or with a service, but my husband uses esnipe.com and is quite happy with them. There is a charge for bidding through them.
