It is most things with a value over $20.00 Canadian not #100.00.

If it has a value over $20.00 Canadian and is sent by regular mail

and is checked by Customs you pay the taxes for what ever province

you live in plus a $9.95 customs fee.

Many times the item is not checked so no taxes or fees are incurred.

However, Custom can and will open packages and revalue your item.

That is incorrect.

Please check the official Canadian government website for postal imports:

worth mentioning -

The $9.95 the post office may charge is still not bad compared to the $40 that the couriers Fedex, UPS etc will definitely charge you.

Also on a side note, we're really beginning to appreciate the diabolical underside (especially as online buyers and sellers are concerned) of the "Harmonized" sales taxes.

Since the provinces have no realistic way to have a customs service, they have never even dreamed of being able to collect provincial sales tax on items purchased by their residents from out of province or country. Now with harmonized sales tax, the provinces just piggy-back on the federal customs service and reap their cut on the overall cash grab. Now, Ontario, for example, is able to collect sales tax not only on purchases buyers make from out-of-province, but also from out-of-country.

People in provinces that don't have it should be fighting tooth and nail to keep it out.

There are serious people in Alberta now making noise about the benefits of bringing in a provincial sales tax and some are saying, hey, might as well make it harmonized.

???

For years, well before HST was introduced into Ontario, Canada Customs collected both GST (federal) and PST (provincial) if applicable.  That applied whether parcels were coming by mail or through courriers or truckers.

Pierre he did NOT mention custom's he mentioned  "sellers". Before HST came out YOU collect Ontario and GST ONLY , and if sold to any other province you collected GST ONLY. Now with HST you are required by LAW to collect HST in ANY province that also has HST but if they have a province sales tax AND GST you are required to collect GST ONLY.

NOW Ontario is getting Tax that they never got before in sales from other provinces and sold to Ontario where before through custom they only got out of country IF it was caught.
