Hi Lily.. Any item costing over $20 (excluding shipping) imported into Canada is subject to duty , if any plus normal taxes for your province. Duty depends on classification and where manufactured.
None for many items.
By mail..Canada Post charges a fee of $8.50 if Customs assigns charges. Many items get deliver with no charges as Customs can't inspect all but don't count on it.
Charges always occur with couriers like UPS/FEDEX and they charge a hefty brokerage fee . Avoid if at all possible . Some seller who indicate courier might consider shipping mail if you ask.
Factor into cost consideration when bidding on items.

heidilynn, forgive me for saying, but I have had an item arrive from the U.S. valued at $250.00USD, delivered signature confirmed...import duties & taxes for the item, a grand total of $0.00CAN, shipped UPS...yep, you read it right.
So ALMOST all items are subject to duties & taxes, not all.
(item in question, gaming headphones for my kid, not sold in Canada).

hereiam -- Occasionally a professional seller who knows the system will ship by courier to Canada using an Express service.
With these (apparently) more expensive services, the customs brokerage fee is part of the cost.
If the item were made in a NAFTA country, there would be no duty. If the seller put his country (USA?) instead of the country of manufacture, the customs clerk might let it pass.
There should have been PST/HST/GST charged, but someone got sloppy - or decided that collecting it would be an expense rather than a profit and let it go.
Next time,don;t count on it.
