"Lost" Packages?

Hey there everyone, I just made powerseller a couple of days ago. I send 98% of my T-shirts south of the border. As a result, I am usually using the Small Packet Rate from CP. Insurance and a tracking #is a no go since Airmail is necessary (plus like $10). Most of my packages are under the 500g rate. I have found that a lot of ppl are saying that they are not receiving their packages. I've sent out a few seconds in response to that. Should I be more strict on the "purchase insurance" to recoup costs? Or should I not send out seconds if they don't purchase insurance. What are your opinions on this?

Thanks a ton

Malcolm, is Scott really out of BC? I thought the USA. I was a major distributor of WS commercial paper products in Alberta when the sale went down. Scott was very quick to make changes to the distibution network. It is relatively difficult to find the WS name and logo in the field today but there are still the odd places that it pops up.

I'm familiar with most of the mills (including the closed ones) and converters in Canada and the USA. The Saint John mill at Reversing Falls had long had serious odour control problems. I recall that from my first visit to the mill in the late 70's. I think most mills in Canada have seriously curtailed their bleaching operations. The environmental concerns eventually put significant pressure on all of them to find alternatives.

Growing up in the south end of Ottawa I'm also pretty familiar with the air currents that used to blow from the north and the old Eddy plant. There were easily ten days a month when the morning air was pretty blue with the odours from the mill.

Bill, I don't know if Scott is a US company, but I sure remember them in New Westminster BC in the 50's! Several of my friends got their first jobs working for Scott Paper - they were a major employer in the area! I also don't remember any smell - I suppose they were further along the production line than the basic pulp mills, some of which still are pretty odoriferous!!

When I was involved with them, Scott Canada had minority shares owned by the US operation however it tended to follow the US corporate policies fairly tightly.

I believe that it was a restriction due to Government regulations that would have restricted their access to Crown Lands.

I spent 3 weeks in BC 1 yr after the sale in an audit because of post sale guarantees we gave. WS is still a brand common here but they downgraded the quality of the tp and towels.

Couldnt have been any pulp smell from Eddys in the 1970s as there was no pulp operation for the company in Ottawa. The government stopped the flow of logs on the Ottawa river back in the 1960's as this was, after all, the Nation's Capital.

The papermaking operation also had an incredible system built where it regenerated all the steam it produced and used it to heat buildings and reconverted alot of that steam back into power.

We also owned with Ottawa Hydro and Que Hydro a power dam that generated $12 million in power at a cost of under $1 million (I was Corp Secty of that operation as well).

The smell in Ottawa, that you can still get if you live in the east end of the city is from the pulp mill in Thurso, Quebec, about 35 miles to the east, with all the wind and temperature conditions just right.

Eddy's was the first mill in Canada and one of only 3 in North America to bleach with the Swiss invented oxidization method and remained the only mill in Canada to do it for at least 10 years.

I dont know if you and I ever crossed paths. I was there from 1981 to 1991 but I knew every paper company, convertor, distributor in North America as I was also Corp. Credit Manager (and a dozen other hats I wore).
I travelled frequently to visit my 10,000+ customers.

Oh ya, and my apologies to shirtsbyshik, who started this thread to talk about lost shirts, and the whole topic has turned to "crap".

WS= White Swan

It used to be one of the best brands on the market but the company also made a cheap brand (I cant recall the name right now) The mill guys used to toss all sorts of stuff into the pulper like old wood crates and pallets, broken chairs etc. to make this cheap brand.

Ocassionally you would get a splinter where you least expected it. At least it kept you from falling asleep!

We sold jumbo rolls (huge rolls 10' tall to be converted) of our good grades of tissue into Trinidad where we controlled 80% of the premium toilet paper market in the Caribbean until I cut off supply to our Trinidad customer (he suffered from having too many fires when cash flow was slow and the insurance companies were starting to get tired of paying out claims).
