This is a lousy experience for you but here are a few questions-
Did the Auction have a reserve? If so you might not have bid high enough to win the item.
Did the Auction have much time to go?
Did the seller notify you that the item was damaged or lost or something wrong?
There are many reasons for cancelling an auction, but Ebay takes a pretty dim view of it.
Did you phone Ebay to inquire?
Did the seller relist it?
More info is needed before a conclusion can come of this.
Did you email the seller and ask what happened?
Sometimes there is a simple explanation.
Recent changes to the Ebay rules are that if you end an Auction early you pay a penalty fee (cant recall all the details) but it is not to the advantage of the seller to cancel unless something is real wrong!
Eg - a seller has a shop and an item is stolen while the auction is running - THAT actually happend to me when I had a book shop ! I had to cancel the Auction and take the lumps.
Good Luck -

With all due respect as it didn't cost you anything how exactly do you think you were taken?

A seller can end an auction with bids and if he does not cancel the bids first, the item is deemed to be won by the high bidder.
Is that what happened?
I would think that your winning bid was either the seller's starting price or under your maximum. So you won at the best possible price.
I really don't understand the problem, although sellers who cancel auctions in this way usually discuss it with the bidder first. In fact, it is usually a somewhat sketchey suggestion from the buyer.
