I bought an item that was $99.95 US. The Seller charged me $16.00 for UPS standard shipping to Canada.

The package arrived and here is a Brokerage C.O.D. due to UPS for $54.17. What a rip! The seller said nothing about additional fees due IN ADDITION to the $16.00 I paid him for the shipping. By looking under Help in eBay, I see there is nothing I can do about it.

I too have been stung by the UPS brokerage fees. I have done some comparisons with Fedex costs and find them much more reasonable, usually a minimal amount. I now refuse to deal with sellers who only use UPS( and there are quite afew). If I am in a hurry I'll ask for Fedex. Otherwise it's US Postal Service even though tracking isn't available for the low cost shipping and it can take as long a 3 weeks to get to the West Coast

"In my case, they decided to create an invoice listing each item in the package separately (in spite the same duty classification code for most of the items). As a result the invoice is very long and I was told that in situation like this they multiply number of lines in invoice by set up amount to come up with this broker fee."

Do you mean that they can charge a brokerage fee for each individual item in the box?X-(

ayup 😕

I think I read they'll go up to 5 items per package, more than that they break it down item by item, and charge all the blah on each item

Another reason to stick to usps huh

It's a good thing they didn't do that with the shipment I got. It was about 300 assorted die cast cars with a total declared value of $1500.

A suggested listing tip for U.S.
Sellers who only ship by UPS/Fedex:

We only ship by courier so you can guess;
When you get it, the cost is excess;
Shipping cost? Hey, that's just a fraction;
The total cost means dissatisfaction;
Buy from us and that's just great;
But don't blame us with the fuss you'll create;
If you buy, it means you understand;
That when you get it, you might be scammed;
Consider this as just a warning;
So sleep on it - come back in the morning.

I have used UPS, FexEd & regular mail to import stuff into Canada. My experiences offer the following: Postal Service can & usually is much cheaper. But it might not be as punctual. And just like all other services - when something goes wrong, it can get pretty complicated. Always use a level of service which offers a tracking number.

- In Aug/05 I had a parcel (glass) arrived from New Zealand and sat at the Vancouver Canada Customs office for 3 wks. There is no time limit or way to predict how long it will take Canada Customs to complete your clearance. If your parcel has arrived while they are not busy, it can get through in a matter of days. Apparently they were really busy that Aug - paperwork (invoice & classification) and documentation was completed and still attached to the parcel ... no reason for the delay that I could find.

- In another experience - Canada Customs needed clarification to identify the goods. They held the parcel and SENT THEIR REQUEST FOR INFORMATION BY LETTER in regular mail (even though my phone number was on the exterior of the parcel).

- Any clearance I've done with a courier is usually pretty seemless - It is in their interest to have your clearance filed punctually, and deliver the parcel close to the timeframe of the level of shipping. They sometimes even deliver your goods before clearance is finalized. Is it worth the cost they charge??? Depends entirely on the goods.

But for parcels not time sensitive - and value less than $1500CAD - USPS & Canada Post are the best bang for your buck.

Jan 11/08, bought an item that was $102.50US. according to ebay invoice seller sent, invoice showed a $15.00 US shipping charge to ship via USPS First Class Mail International. Paid the seller the total due $117.50US.

The seller without telling me sent item, yeah you guessed it, UPS. I never request a UPS delivery, way to expensive, I do not buy from sellers who show UPS Standard Delivery in auction listings. At time of delivery UPS wanted a COD payment of $54.31Canadian(that's about $52.90US). Did not pay UPS' outrageous fees, refused delivery. Same day sent seller email stating item is being returned and why. Asked seller to resend item using the US Post Office. Let them know that had they used Post Office as was agreed to in the ebay invoice...my costs at time of delivery would of been $18.68Canadian(about 18.30US)....I have no problems with paying duty taxes...I do have a problem with Sellers who state they will send item using post office, then send item using UPS and don't tell a buyer they did this until after the parcel has left the building...there is no way anyone would know in advance that a seller would do this.....Oh yeah called UPS was told the brokerage fee was $45.00Can....the girl at UPS couldn't tell me or didn't know how to figure out how UPS came up with the $54.31Can for a COD fee....what a joke....yeah 50% fee sounds abour right.....

Since you agreed and paid for the item to be shipped USPS and the seller arbitrarily shipped by UPS, you were right in not accepting delivery. It is now the seller's responsibility to correct this. Expect repercussions when UPS collects from the seller.

Yep, what a learning experience, UPS did it to me, paid $40 for a seat and $46 to UPS. They won't do it again, I demand to use USPS. And, BTW, many sellers make their money on overcharging on shipping costs. I buy when the shipping is sensible. They are shooting themselves in the foot...you can only do it to some of the people some of the time.....right!

My 2 cents, Yves

UPS is the biggest scam known to man. If the sellers do not wise up and use Fedex, they will soon find themselves trying to sell things with no success. UPS will not get my business anymore even if they were the last wagon coming to Canada with packages. I hope that they go broke the lying, gouging pieces of garbage that they are. If anyone actually thinks that every courier has the same import charges into Canada, think again and look into it, they don't. UPS has inflated prices and the sellers are letting them do it by not having more than UPS has a courier choice. Lets please try and have some competition here so that we can all get a fair price on shipping. Thankyou.

I wish the lawsuit will be a successful one. As I was a victim as well. FIRST OFF, You do need a consent from a customer in order to collect money on behalf of Revenue Canada, or you must well inform of the act... UPS failed all above. PLEASE LET US JOIN THE LAWSUIT. I don't believe that our government will ignore this , although UPS brings a certain revenue to the government, but the reality is that UPS is conducting their business unethical way. The truth is prevailing...

texjackson, I hate to have to break the news to you but FedEx is a courier, the same as UPS. They also charge unconscionable brokerage fees, just like UPS.

The only way around it is USPS, the American postal system. Using the mail, if your package gets snagged for assessment, you will only pay a $5.00 brokerage fee ($8.00 for Priority) plus the tax, of course. And quite often, items sail right through without being assessed.
