I bought an item that was $99.95 US. The Seller charged me $16.00 for UPS standard shipping to Canada.

The package arrived and here is a Brokerage C.O.D. due to UPS for $54.17. What a rip! The seller said nothing about additional fees due IN ADDITION to the $16.00 I paid him for the shipping. By looking under Help in eBay, I see there is nothing I can do about it.
The money's the same, whether you earn it or scam it.

UPS is ripping off canadian customers. although it may not be the sellers responsibility to inform the customer good , honest, reliable sellers often do inform us that UPS charges brokerage fees. when we are hit with 50% and more brokerage fees we tend to be very angry and wish that the seller would not recmmend the RIP-OFF UPS SERVICE. tell everyone who imports to canada about these UPS----=ROBBERS

50% UPS Brokerage fee????

It is always worth remembering that in the USA, domestic shipping by UPS is often cheaper, faster and more reliable than by USPS. And they pick up, while USPS keeps closing Post Offices and removing postboxes.

Your US seller may not realize that the situation for a foreign shipment is very different.

If you are thinking of buying from a US seller who ships domestically by UPS, be sure that they understand that you require USPS shipping and ask about the shipping fee for the USPS service.

Some will refuse. Fine. Move on.

The problem is not with the US seller. It is with UPS.

Do your homework before bidding.

Yeah, I got hammered by UPS brokerage fees once too. The thing is, I knew about this being a possibility with UPS beforehand, so I used to always avoid any seller using UPS as their transporter: accept only USPS. But in this case, in a moment of inattention I did not check the transport company and sure enough I got dinged.

If it goes through USPS, then it will come through Canada Post on this end, and CP rarely ever charges brokerage fees of any kind. At least I have not encountered it from them yet. In fact, I was originally expecting to get dinged by taxes and duties at every turn when I first started bidding here, so I used to use this website to calculate my taxes and duties:

www.myborderpro.com

That's based on Canada Post delivery, and you'll notice that CP has a flat $5 brokerage fee. So even if you get dinged by Canada Post, you're must better off with them than with UPS.

Uh oh -- I have a problem. I won an item a few days ago on ebay.com. My official ebay-registered address is in Canada, but one of the shipping addresses I have associated with my account is in the US, and I also have that same address as a confirmed shipping address with Paypal. I marked that address as the "ship to" in both places -- but I've just received a notice that the seller has shipped via UPS to Canada -- the package is already in Ft. Erie! It's for something that cost $120, and I've just had a look at the UPS brokerage fees, and I'm really not happy. I suppose there's nothing I can do at this point, right? Does my Canadian address automatically show up somewhere? I'm sure I've done this before (indicated the US shipping address) and never had this happen...

Thanks,

Learning the UPS brokerage fee (aka Extortion) by the hard way.

I purchase an item on ebay for U$40, and paid U$18.45 for S & H (by UPS).
On delivery the UPS guy asked me to pay C$38.xx
I refused to accept the delivery of this item.

I am hoping the seller to take return and refund me the item price, and I will only lose U$18.45 for the S&H.

As a note, recently I also bought another item for U$40 item and paid only U$10 for S & H (by USPS) and it came to me without any additional chargers.

UPS you suck, and after this experience I will never ever use UPS.

Canadian bidder please NEVER use UPS.

I really hope you are reading this before you burnt by UPS .

I avoid UPS like the plague for this very reason. As a courier service, they are fine, but these customs fees they charge are ridiculous! Not only are they a lot more than the Post Office or Fedex, but they've charged me for customs fees every single time, whereas Fedex and the Post Office do not. My personal experience has been that it is the exeption not the norm to be charged ANY customs fees when using the post office and that Fedex charges customs only about 2 out of every 5 times I use them.

I really don't mind being asked to pay extra for customs, but when it is 2 to 4x what Fedex and the post office charge, you can't help but feel violated and that they are treating this as a revenue centre - why else is it so much more than anyone else?? I have used them until recently, but only as a last resort. This week it happened to me again, worse than ever. This was the last time. I will never use them again for anything nor will I buy anything from anyone who only ships through them. Sadly, their drivers probably take a lot of flack over this (this one did from me, I am not proud to say, the frustration just bubbled over) and it is not their fault - it is the neck tie greedy jerks in upper management who just can't help themselves because the millions of extra dollars in extortion fees just feel too damn good! It is legalized THEFT!!

The "P" should stand for "Pirate" because thats what they are.

50% UPS Brokerage fee????

neotechni-They are not adding on shipping fees. They are adding on duty and taxes which goes to the government and then adding their fees for collecting those taxes. They are not doing anything illegal although I would say that some of their charges are unethical.

I'm not quite sure what you are sayiing in your post. Have you already had something delivered by UPS and have been charged extra fees?

"They are not adding on shipping fees"

Yea, it is. They are asking me to pay more for shipping the item, that is still "shipping". All they were hired to do was ship the item. IF they are charging me for anything else, then it IS ILLEGAL.

And according the lawyer I spoke with, them adding fees after I paid already, is also illegal. I have signed up for a class action suit.

Do not insult me by defending their bs.

This thread is three years old going on four. Lots of people complaining. Lots of people grossly misinformed. Lots of talk of lawyers.

The only ones making money here are UPS and the lawyers.

NOTHING has been done. NOTHING will be done. UPS is allowed to charge for services rendered. You need to inform yourself and not blame it on ignorance (that you didn't know about it).

UPS and every other courier is going to charge a brokerage fee for bringing an item over the border and any lawyer will take your money to fight anything whether or not they think you have a case. They'll cry with you, pound their chest, shout out about the injustices of it all and they'll still take your money and nothing will be done.

Have a nice day!

No one is blaming ignorance. It's an insult that you'd lie about that and defend their criminal actions by blaming the victims.

According to consumer's rights, it's illegal to charge more for an item after the point of sale. It's also illegal to add user agreements after the point of sale, which is why EULAs that come with software is also illegal.

And considering they already quoted us a lower cost before hand, they can't change that.

Worse, I checked their website (once I found out in my tracking that it went through a broker) and it quoted me a brokerage fee less than HALF of what they charged me.

So don't ignorantly blame ignorance.

You don't need any one to insult your intelligence, you're doing a great job of it yourself. You don't seem willing to accept that brokerage fees, extortionate they may be,are NOT shipping charges.
This class action lawsuit you mention deals with how ups calculates brokerage fees and the size of those fees.It has nothing to do with the basic legality of brokerage fees.I also think that you are putting your own slant on what your lawyer told you.

I bought a 8,95$ item with 16,00$ shipping fee. When UPS knocked at my door they wanted another 23,85$ for brockerage fees. I told the guy where he can insert the package 😉

Why do they don't use USPS?

I too will never do business with a seller using UPS.

It's not the seller's fault. Yes it's a rip off but it's UPS fault. You probably gave the seller a bad feedback. Because of people like you I have trouble buying from the states.......I'm making major assumptions here.

I was served noticed from UPS that I have to pay $42, for a $10 item. Luckily, I wasn't home. I want to know if it is all right to just ignore the parcel up to their third try, after which the parcel will be shipped back to the seller? I'd rather forget about that $10 shoes I won than pay the criminal fee. The seller may not be aware, but there was nowhere in his listing shipping by UPS. I thought that should be sellers' responsibility. Anyway, I emailed the seller of my intention. Thanks all.

Well, it depends on your point of view.

I doubt if the seller will think it's okay, because he's going to get charged for the fees and the return shipping.

You aren't supposd to be charged at all for a $10.00 item, though - the fees and clearance shouldn't kick in until the value is $20.

Might be worth a call to UPS to see why they did a clearance on such a low value item - they might have made a mistake.
