I just ordered an item 2 days ago and cancelled it 5 minutes later. I got a notification in my email the the seller sent me a refund back to the original payment method (visa debit) but it didn't show up in my bank. I am quite upset as it was all the money I had left.
will the refund appear in a few days or should I start a case? How can I get eBay to step in?

You're probably looking at 2-5 days if the transaction was handled through paypal. You can check with your Visa debit provider to see what handling times are involved to process a refund through the Visa system.

Even if the payment is processed through Paypal, the refund will show up not as a PP balance, but on your credit card if that was how you backed your PP account.
If you are backing with your debit card, you are writing an 'e-cheque', which has to clear two banking systems before the seller is paid. When it is cancelled the whole process is reversed.
I'd give it a good five days, then if you still don't have it, call Paypal (not eBay).
