1927 Religious Symbol deemed "Offensive"

In 1927, my Grandfather travelled to Japan and purchased a very unique and uncommon Japanese table cloth complete with Japanese temples and swastikas.

As many of you may know, the swastika is an ancient Sanskrit symbol of well-being (Google it) present for thousands of years and used in Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism religions.

My E-Bay listing of this item has been deemed “Offensive” and has been removed, even though E-Bay’s policy states, “Any item that is anti-Semitic or any item from after 1933 that bears a swastika.” This item is a religious symbol from1927 and pre-Nazi and should not have been removed as offensive.

As I am unable to find a resolution with E-Bay, I noticed that I can ask the E-Bay community for their input and I look forward to your assistance.

Thank you in advance.

Unfortunately, there is probably nothing that you can do to be able to list it here.  Even if a phone rep tells you that it is ok to list it again, chances are very good that it will be removed again and that will hurt your account even more.  AI may have removed it and afaik customer service is unable to reverse those type of decisions.

Meanings change.

The swastika was as you say a symbol of good luck for centuries.

Then the Nazis made it something evil.

If you really want to sell it, try another site, but you might not want to mention the swastikas.

And you might not like the kind of person who woud buy it for the current symbolism.

I've run into a similar quagmire in the past trying to list older versions of Rudyard Kipling books. The practice was stopped later as per Kipling. It will be either standard or reversed. Brief search notes on the topic below.

a)The Anglo-Indian author Rudyard Kipling (1865–1936), who was strongly influenced by Indian culture, used a swastika as his personal emblem on the covers and flyleaves of many editions of his books, along with the elephant, signifying his affinity with India.

b)The extraordinary feature of the use of the symbol by Kipling's publishers was that there was no uniformity in whether the right turn or left turn was used.

c)Kipling was born in Mumbai. The swastika is an ancient symbol that originates from Eastern and Southeastern Asia. It's true that at the same time your version was published the symbol was already popular in Germany, but this is still pre-WWII. And remember, Hitler was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize in 1939, so the symbol had a different meaning back then than it does now.

Much of what is flagged by eBay is done by its AI or when a complaint is received. In both cases there is very limited you can do except due dilligence and lots of research before listing anything possibly questionable. I know. Very frustrating. In majority of cases these are learning experiences.  But the appeals process in these situations is VERY difficult to navigate with a terrible sucess rate even if you try. Unsure what the answer is. This is only my experience and what I have discovered from others. Any work arounds you may discover could still be playing with fire.

I wouldn't risk relisting it. Not because you are wrong about the historical context, but because eBay generally comes down harder on accounts that relist items that are removed.

If you contact eBay's @AskeBay page on Twitter or Facebook, they have better customer service than the one on the website. It might be worth it to provide info and explain to them that it's pre-1933. Not that this would allow you to relist it, but if there is any sort of policy violation on your account, they might at least remove it. If there is an avenue for you to relist it, that would be the place to ask, but my primary concern would be ensuring that any strikes (similar to a counterfeit strike) could be appealed and possibly removed.

A rule of thumb for eBay is that if a listing is removed by their automated policies, there is a good chance it would be removed again. Some people do relist stuff when they feel the removal was in error, but I would advise against doing that for any item that has been removed.

If there is no proof of age, other than oral family history, I don't see an avenue to overturn this.

Unfortunately, that symbol was hijacked like many other symbols in the past by Hitler and his supporters.

"Nazi Germany, as part of a deliberate program of extermination, systematically killed over 11 million people including 6 million Jews."

There are enough reasons to pass that "heirloom" on to a family member or donate it to a museum, but trying to hawk it again on eBay may get you suspended real quick.

Anyone for a Robinson Jam "Golly", another no, no...
