You do not have to accept the return. Buyers are covered by eBay for 60 days.
Any action you take to assist the buyer is entirely up to you at that point. Unless there is some sort of implied level of support or warranty with the purchase, most people would consider it extremely unreasonable to ask a seller to resolve an issue with an item after 8 months.

EBay's Money Back Guarantee ends 30 days after delivery.
Paypal's Buyer Protection ends 180 days after payment.
Credit card chargeback policies differ, but few are more than 180 days from payment.
If you can refer the customer to a repair shop in his area, it would be nice of you.

Perhaps the manufacturer can assist, even if it is now under warranty. Seems like a specialized repair.
