Buyer essentially setting up Seller to fail.

- A buyer lives primarily in USA but makes consistent business trips to Ukraine.

 

- In past 6 months, buyer has stated though positive feedback left, that 33 of 37 items sent never arrived to address in Ukraine.

 

- When contacted to ask about possible issues with delivery failure rate, buyer confirms that rate of delivery and mail service in Ukraine is "abysmal"

 

- In comparison, Buyer states that in 18 months only 1 out of 187 items have not arrived to primary USA address.

 

- Indicates that perhaps "tracking" is a better option for a seller to have item "stand more of a chance"

 

 

I get that shipping destinations and not tracking an item is a seller choice. Putting tracking on my items would price me right out of the International market. Again, I get that it's all a choice a seller can make.

 

In this case though, why is this buyer even bothering having things sent to the Ukraine?

 

As for the tracking suggestion...if that rate was on this item I wouldn't be making this post because I would never have dealt with this buyer in the first place Smiley Wink

I used to use small packet  to ship worldwide...many years ago... no tracking...

 

 

and then when the 45 day limit was enforced for ...non-receipt ...I stopped shipping to the southern Pacific....

 

Then I stopped mailing to certain European countries and elsewhere... either because of the time for mail delivery or the character of the buyer.

 

and then gradually moved to the use of tracking options for postage....

 

But....Then even tracking became a failure.

 

It was in the summer of 2014  that of 9 parcels that were mailed to European countries... 5 did not have tracking shown beyond Montreal

 

The next stop in Canada would have indicated the parcel had left Canada....  Two of those 5 no tracking  situations became defects....

 

Today  I ship only to destinations in Canada and the US.  with about 70 %  of parcels having tracking.... the rest as oversize lettermail 

 

Over time it was noticed that I was gradually getting greater exposure in the US market..

There is also a possibility that how one communicates with buyers can influence the buyer's response to the shipping question.

It won't do any good for this transaction, but you can add Ukraine to the destinations you won't service.

Yes, but.....

Not putting tracking on loses you both the item and the payment, so you are worse off not tracking and getting sales that end in Disputes than tracking and getting fewer sales.

 

It may depend on your category of course. It always does. Woman Frustrated

Is there a lot of competition in the 'used dvds and games' category? Do your competitors even ship to international destinations? How much do they charge?

Do the US sellers in your category who sell internationally use the GSP?

The GSP is a great help to sellers* since they only have to prove domestic delivery (to the GSP plant in Kentucky).

 

I'm constantly surprised at how much overseas buyers will pay for an item they have been desperately looking for. It may seem high to us, but it comes down to arbitrage. If it is hard to get in Australia, but easy to find in Canada, the Australian will be happy to pay full pop.

Could it be time to block certain countries...

 

This buyer has a US address..... block Ukraine as a ship-to country....   could that be an option?.....

 

This buyer should understand.... hopefully.....

I am currently in a situation now that buyers outside of Canada and the US have me ship to destinations in Canada and the US  and then a friend or family member forwards the parcel.....

 

Fortunately these parcels are also tracked to the North American address.

If I had noticed this (normally I do not check buyers unless they have very little feedback, or are from very dangerous countries)...

 

I would have sent with tracking regardless of the value of the package, just to avoid the defects and work around the INR process.

 

The "cash" that I'd use/lose would come from my insurance "cookie jar" that Femme talks about.... once they got the package and left feedback I'd quickly block them.

 

I have done this with buyers from China, before I changed my minimum shipping charge to China (and Brazil) to $17.50 which looked after that problem.

Actually it is not that simple. I had a series of refunds for INR to Mexico, Chile, Brazil. So, I blocked these countries. I loosened up a bit, and BINGO, i have a series of everything going perfect.

 

All I can really lose is the shipping cost. I cannot lose unrealized profit. My COGS is virtually zero.

 

I had a problem with Israel for a bit and now no problems. Never had a problem with any Asian countries, nor with Russia.

 

The PayPal shipping label with the bar code on it caused a major drop in INR claims. It looks "official".

 

Clerks at the PO continue to say they have no idea what that bar code is for.

 

Had a buyer in Brazil advise me on how to label what he had bought. Something like "parts of parts".

 

Having worked in liquor stores for 35 years, I simply consider INRs as shoplifting and budget for a certain amount of loss.

In this case shouldn't you have asked your buyer that instead of other Canadian sellers?

I would guess its because he or someone he knows lives there, but I could be wrong.
