I didn't see this on a thread anywhere.
Canada Post is removing US Small Packet Surface. Also looks like they are removing $100.00 insurance off Air and adding Tracked Parcel instead.

No pricing yet. Oh boy, lots of work ahead to change all my listings.

So they can announce only a 3.7% fee increase, while hiding a massive fee increase created by removing surface

Something new
" A Tracked Packet service"
12-14-2012 01:08 PM
For a small packet weighing 0.9 kg.
Air is $3.00 more than surface.
We should also remember that USPS uses airmail for all international parcels....

Ventureone adjustments for that tracked packet surface .... perhaps

another way for CP to shaft smaller sellers of lighter items. Removal of free $100.00 insurance on small packet will be a min of 12.5% fee increase for private insurance to replace it. With all the fraud on Ebay now and removal of free insurance, many people will have to rethink selling internationally due to cost or raise fees substantially. More money for CP and Ebay in fees

The basic $100 liability coverage included with existing Small Packet™ products will be removed, but will be included in the new
Tracked Packet™ service.
More costs. I always use small packet surface to the U.S. as I find it arrives as quickly as small packet air. So now I have to pay more for air and lose the $100 coverage. Also I use small packet air to other locations and now no insurance on that.
Tracked Packet™ service. will likely cost quite a bit more.

You bet it will cost more! Probably similar to any other tracking cost from Canada, outrageous!

I found this document on Canada Post website and it has more details than the first post link.

Tracked Packet is for USA only. This makes sense since USA has DC available for all domestic shipments by USPS. No big deal to add Canada Post shipments to USPS letter carriers scanning of packages when they deliver the mail.
Small Packet Air and Surface still available for International.
No mention of Light Packet USA and International.
12-14-2012 01:51 PM
Sorry, I reread the document and Tracked Packet is available for USA and International.
12-14-2012 01:57 PM
Does not appear to have signature required available. Another knife in the back for small lighter item sellers

Removal of free $100.00 insurance on small packet will be a min of 12.5% fee increase for private insurance to replace it.
I use Small Packet a lot, for the insurance, with the thought that if an eBay customer claims non-delivery, I can use the insurance to pay out without the extra expense of "tracking". No drawn out arguments, just the usual delay with CP's delivery times.
But if there were automatic DC, then the insurance would not be necessary. The world's postal systems are very reliable about delivery - if not always fast.
However, I said "eBay customer" deliberately, because with decades in mail order selling everything from woodstoves to postage stamps, and thousands of customers, I have to say that the eBay customer is the most impatient and the one most likely to claim non-receipt, even when the product is one that generally has a very ethical clientele, like philately.
If the cost of the new 'tracking" (which I would prefer to be Confirmation of Delivery) is reasonable- as in less than a loonie, I don't think I would complain. Well, not much.
I would suggest that each seller who is unhappy about this send a letter to your Member of Parliament. There is no need to put a stamp on the envelope for this. Just write OHMS where the stamp would go. (MPs get 'free franking" privileges on both incoming and outgoing mail. ) Parliament only controls the price of Registration and of First Class Domestic letters, but at least it will put it on the radar.
Hmm- how about letters to the Business Editors of the Globe and Mail and of the Ottawa Citizen (both widely read in Ottawa) about this blow to small business and to the one growth part of Canada Post's business?

That new tracked service to the US just might be surface mail... just like Expedite USA, but cost lesse and without any guarantees...
US buyers on eBay will become tuned in to tracking.... mainly because of what USPS has done..
In turn.... Canada Post just may be getting a few too many claims on non-receipt with small packet...
Pay out the insurance... with tracking that would change...
A buyer cannot claim non-receipt if tracking shows delivery....
Things will tighten up on scammers.... and Canada Post will most likely pay out less, maybe much less in insurance claims.

Removal of insurance on Small Packet to USA makes it like Light Packet today. A seller will have to weigh the costs of Tracked Packet versus Small Packet and "self insure" Small Packet like Light Packet today.
Third Party Insurance from shipsurance cost $1.25 US for Small Packet USA currently. This is for insuring $100 value over the current included $100. Hopefully shipsurance will keep a low rate when the new Canada Post services and fees go into effect in January 2013.

FYI - New USPS International Rates in 2013
Canada Post rates to the USA won't look so bad (in relative terms) next year. USPS First Class International rates are going up...WAY up, for some weights more than 50% mostly at the low end of the weight scale (12oz and under).
12-14-2012 03:18 PM
Many in the US look on Canada Post rates as outrageous... especially for books...
USPS Media rates for books are very low.... compare to Canada Post rates where there is no media mail...
And many do not realize ... in many situations... The same parcel shipped
from the US to Canada using USPS
and then
from Canada to the US
would cost about the same... both ways...
The US buyers fail to recognize that media rates do not extend beyond the borders of the US....

I just finished taking to Canada Post about that new mail service of Tracked Packet. Basically the postage rates are nearly the same a few or more cents as the Small Packet Air, but with $100.00 coverage insurance and tracking information where you can track it online. So I am glad that I think I don't need to change too much information in my listings which would be a real hassle as I have nearly 2,000!
As for anyone, have you have any expierence in mailing posters in size 16x20 posters in 24 inches tubes or in 36" tubes and which mail service do you use?
I was told that I cannot mail that size to Italy and Norway and to my dismay that they only allow up to 4 inches for the mailing tubes!! I was asking that lady (she was nice but got bored and hang up on me!) how the heck did Canada Post decided to offer the mail service for that 4 inches size in the mailing tubes??? Who would mail that size? I would mail them flat!! She even offered me to google for the mail service in Canada for which mail services to mail a 16x20 inches poster or more size!! I said I am calling Canada Post to fnd out but apparently she didn't know the answers!!
Does it mean that we cannot use Canada Post to mail a 16x20 or bigger posters???? Do you know?? Any suggestion?? That is for rolled posters, so don't suggest I "fold" it. Thanks.

Tracked Service USA .... can make the adjustments...
But for
Tracked Service International.
Airmail delivery --- would be an expensive option
But then USPS is airmail for international mail....
and Small packet international... without insurance... is questionable
12-14-2012 09:35 PM
😧 No more small packet surface to USA?! That really sucks......
12-14-2012 09:39 PM
The basic $100 liability coverage included with existing Small Packet™ products will be removed, but will be included in the new Tracked Packet™ service.
The above also stings a lot. I use international small packet air for almost all of my international shipments for that $100 insurance coverage, even if I have never had to file any claims. Is there somewhere where I can look up the pricing for "Tracked Packet™"? If it's $1 or $2 more than the original small packet air then it's still acceptable, but if more... *sigh*
It said it's effective as of Jan 14, 2013. So if I mail a bunch of small packet surface / air this month, and something got lost, can I still make an insurance claim?
