Canada post shipping question

No more CP/ship now so does it make any difference if I use CP online for small business or if I just go to the post office with my Venture One card. Will I get any discount at the post office? Very large, heavy pkg going out West and needs tracking and insurance.

Canada post shipping question

Yes mr.e, I know, thanks, but I am shipping a personal package, nothing to do with ebay. Gifts for my daughter and grandchild. That is why I can't ship through PayPal so I have to either go to the post office or use the terribly confusing Can Post site and print my label there. Just weighed the package - 11 kilograms!

Yes, I know, I overdid the shopping (not to mention the items I bought and had shipped directly there). She said the box was heavy last year, wait till she tries to lift this one (must be the homemade fruit cake.) L0L!

Please let us know what you decide to do and how much it cost.  I have parcels to ship out West as well.  I miss the PayPal blank label.

The last time I had a big parcel like yours, I actually shipped it by Greyhound.  I recall that it didn't cost as much as through the Post Office but, of course, the recipient needs to be near a Greyhound bus terminal.

Go to the post office and ship with venture one card and you will get 5% off regular parcel rates. It will also ship by Expedited Parcel with an on time guarantee of 8 days. Since it is slow at Christmas, you might get free shipping (a refund) if it is late ...

If you could ship by PayPal the discount is up to 18% for Expedited Parcel Canada. Someone posted that you have a small payment made to you (from your daughter) as goods (50 cents) and then you can use PayPal shipping to ship the item. Or have her buy something from you. Convoluted but it might work. The savings on Expedited Parcel at 18% will pay for the PayPal amount easily. And you still get the ontime guarantee and possible refund ...

The workaround above is easy to do for personal items but not possible for people you do not know.

PS Someone confirm what I think I read about this workaround.

Yes you can use PayPal Shipping to print a shipping label.  What I do is to use one of my buyers and click "print shipping" and click edit to change address to the address you want to ship.  It worked for me all the time.  I do that because I am not willing to pay more than what PayPal shipping offers!  LOL.

Someone posted using this method sends an email to the original buyer saying an item has been shipped. This could lead to some potential issues with the buyer wanting to know where the item is.

I tried that.  Even though I changed the address, the original buyer got an e-mail from PayPal indicating that I had shipped something to her and she contacted me to find out what.  Other posters have said the same thing happened to them.

My comment on the sending of a PayPal invoice as goods will not work because it is not an ebay transaction. Not thinking right.

One way is to have them buy an ebay item and so you can ship to them whatever you want. And maybe refund after. ???

Pocomo, i thought your idea makes sense.  Not thru ebay. But you can still send anyone a Paypal invoice and once paid

create a shipping label.

I thought the Shipping discount (say Expedited Parcel 18%) was only from an ebay sale??

Not really, I can use PayPal Shipping for not eBay sales.  It works for me each time.  Again, I am not willing to pay more than what PayPal Shipping offers.

Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately she doesn't have a Paypal account and I don't want to have to ask her to set one up just now. I signed in to Can Post with my Venture One card and to ship expedited it will cost me at least $41.94. Yikes! And that's not including the extra insurance I will need. Next year everything is going to be purchased online - with free shipping if I can get it!

Other years it has cost me about $35 but somehow over $40 seems so much more!

Sitting here with a pulled muscle or pinched nerve in my back and half dopey from medication for pain. May have to ask a neighbour to carry my pkg. out to my car for me. Hubby can't, he's going in for hip surgery next week. And my Christmas cookies aren't even made yet, plus workmen coming in next week and can't put them off, and I'm hosting Christmas dinner. Having a pity party here!

Awwww!

It seems that the Christmas season rarely goes smoothly.  There are always so many unexpected events, or illness, or other distractions that make the whole season hectic.

Hope everything goes well for you!

I hope your back soon improves vintagenorth, I had it last week and it's miserable, especially trying to sleep.

I wish I had an answer for your shipping problem, I need it too. It was so much easier before eBay sold Paypal.

Can you send an invoice to yourself to activate the Print label?

That was my understanding too.  I don't think you get those discounts if the invoicing is done through Paypal, although of course you are able to use the Paypal labeling system.

There is also the alternative of using Canada Post's online labeling feature.  You just have to make sure you sign in first into your "Solutions for Small Business" account so you get the usual discount (what used to be called "Venture One").

Thanks for the nice thoughts, jt and triber! I did mail my pkg today at the post office. I was pleasantly surprised when it ended up costing me about $8 less than I expected when compared to the Can Post site small business quote. Cost me $40.47 and that included my extra insurance. With my Venture One card, it went expedited and will probably get to DD's post office about Dec. 21st. Its very rural so takes extra time.

Been very careful last few days and back is feeling much better now. Dear hubby insisted on carrying in my pkg to the PO. Poor man, he can barely walk and will be having his total hip replacement on Monday. People looked at me strangely when they saw him trying to hobble and carry my pkg for me. No good me trying to stop him; he'd likely be up on a ladder trying to put up Christmas lights if he thought he could get away with it.

My posties want to know when they will be getting their cookie treats so hopefully I can do some baking when I get home from the long trek to the hospital each day. I am what they now call his "coach". I think that means I have to look after him in the hospital instead of the nursing staff, plus they will teach me how to help him exercise and how to change his dressings (yuck!) Oh well, he should be home by next Thursday, I'll have a whole week to get ready for Christmas!
