Interesting article about postage rates from China. In 2018 the untracked small packet rate from China to Canada will increase by up to 100%. I don’t know what the rate is now but I’m sure it will still be much cheaper than a comparable service from Canada to Asia.

Canada | 137.7yuan (Air) | 86.2yuan (surface) |
For parcels under a kilo.
A yuan is just under 20 cents, so a Chinese seller can ship one kilo to Canada for $27.54 by air or $17.24 by surface. Unless I have my decimal points confused.
If I am right, and they double, that puts Chinese shipping more like the cost of shipping from Canada to China.
And means the West won the UPU dispute.

Small Parcels China to Canada (untracked, max 2kg)
Base rate 5CNY for 50g then 0.09CNY per additional gram
Canada Post starts from a base of 250g and jumps in 250g or 500g increments for Small Packet. Even if the prices were similar, the Chinese seller has the advantage of not overpaying for package weight.
2017 Canada Post vs China Post
Based on exchange rate of 1CNY = 0.19CAD
050g ... 12.12 vs 0.95
250g ,,, 12.12 vs 4.37
500g ... 23.29 vs 8.64
750g ... 43.84 vs 12.92
1.0kg ... 43.84 vs 17.19
CP Small Packet air counter rates shown (if using Shippo or PayPal would be about 20% cheaper)

But the cost will take 4 yrs to actually double and by that time Canada Post prices will probably go up and we won’t be any better off! (Not that I’ll probably care in another 4 yrs anyway).

That's where the Chinese Free Shipping comes in as heavy competition.
On the other hand, if the product is inexpensive (like my paperbacks) LetterPost is $3.50 up to 50 grams and $10.30 to 200 grams.... well, no, I guess that doesn't work out either.
I don't have Light Packet rates for overseas. But again they start at $6,84 for 200 grams to USA. So the lower weight advantage still rests with China.
I'm less worried about inflation, although having had a mortgage in the 70s, I'm usually pretty paranoid about that.
What we can't control is the value of the yuan. I'm fairly sure it is artificially priced by the Chinese government at the moment, though whether they decide to let it rise or let it fall, I'm not enough of an economist to understand which would be better for importers.

We ship out of China and if the price increase was only 100% that would be just fine.
The fact is that the rates charged by China Post have more than tripled for most popular services starting 2018!!
Rates for small packages in $CAD
CHINA POST AIR MAIL
up to 100 grams - from $3.44 to $5.74
each additional 100 grams - from $2.87 to $5.16
so cost of sending a 1Kg package: from $29.27 to $52.18
CHINA POST SAL
up to 100 grams - from $2.10 to $5.74
each additional 100 grams - from $1.34 to $4.40 !!!!
so cost of sending a 1Kg package: from $14.16 to $45.34 !!!
It's now actually cheaper to ship anything but the smallest packages by courier Wouldn't be surprised to see riots breaking out because these increases, especially for SAL service are INSANE!!

I buy batteries from China all the time. I would say the average weight is from 1/2 lb to 1 lb. I have never been charged shipping and the batteries are anywhere from 10 % to 25 % of the Canadian cost, so I don't think they are hiding the shipping in the cost.
They are decent batteries as well- some are knock offs and some are not.
Go figure.

Don't get too excited....many China based sellers will move (if they haven't already) to alternate services (of which there are many).
Even if they don't, anyone with volume won't be paying the posted rates.
