Currency confusion

I sold an item to a buyer in Florida.  It was listed in Can.$.  On ebay.com, it showed in US.$.  It's only the price of the item, as shipping was free.  The invoice is in Can.$ on both .ca and .com.  Could I have changed the invoice to US.$?  Does this buyer have conversion fees when she pays?  I thought the invoice on .com should show the US price it sold for.  This is the first item I sold, that was listed in Can.$, which sold to a US buyer.  It was just last night, so there are no issues.  I have more items in Can.$.  If they sell to US buyers, I have to make sure, to make it as smooth for them as possible.  Thanks all.

"Could I have changed the invoice to US.$?"

 No

eBay will always invoice in the currency of the listing, regardless on the country of the buyer and seller.

The only way around it (and I do NOT recommend it) is to send a PayPal invoice in the equivalent US$ and manually adjust the eBay information when payment is received.

I'm also interested in the OP's question as to whether the buyer will end up stuck with a conversion fee when he/she makes the payment, i.e. a U.S. buyer paying via $US for an item invoiced in $Cdn.

Do you know if this is the case?  If so, I wouldn't blame a U.S. buyer for being unhappy about paying a premium of ca. 2% to 3% on a purchase, especially if the item were sold for a relatively high price.

I would think this would be one argument against listing in $Cdn if a seller knows the majority of their buyers are American.

Re: Currency confusion

So, I just got paid for the purchase listed in Can.$.  I'm sure the US buyer did not get to convert for free, as I got paid in Can.$.  In order to provide customer service for the bulk of my buyers(US), I shall go back to list in US$.  I also think it's easier for us sellers to keep track of our expenses, as fees are charged in US.  How would we know exactly what we're paying, as it depends on the exchange rate.  Just a thought. Cheers

Re: Currency confusion

Yes they would have had to pay a fee for the currency being converted but I doubt that they would even notice it as it is not a separate fee.  It is added on to the current exchange rate so instead of the exchange being .70 it might be .725 or something like that. (those numbers are just examples..I'm not saying that is the exchange rate)

You can change your billing currency if you wish (i.e. the currency in which eBay bills you on your seller invoices).  So if you prefer to sell in $Cdn, you could change your eBay billing to $Cdn.  Read through the information page though, to make sure the switch will serve your particular purposes and that you're doing it at the best time for your billing cycle, since you can only switch once per 12 month period:

http://pages.ebay.ca/help/sell/billing-currency.html   (You have to click on the "Switch Billing Currency Page" link in that section to actually perform the switch).

There will be a bit of a muddle of invoicing for a few weeks until the old account is cleared out, but after that all charges will go to the new billing system only.

However, obviously if you're planning to go back to listing in $US exclusively, if you pay your eBay bills via your $US Paypal balance, you'll avoid conversion fees being charged to you by Paypal (nothing to do with your buyers, but another small hidden seller expense that can be eliminated).
